* fried Shrimps (@ McDonalds, but they are expensive: 5 of them for 6.50$)

* Canned herring in tomato sauce

* Pangasius catfish (fried)

* salmon (as spread for bread)

* tuna (on pizza)
Is this trolling or for real?

For real. Why are you asking ?

To answer the question, I'm not sure there's a better food in the world than a medium-rare salmon fillet with crispy skin.

Other--eel. I've never understood what's supposed to be so great about salmon. Lox is delicious, but most other preparations of salmon leave me cold. It's meaty, sticks weirdly in the mouth, and I'm not sure I can articulate why the flavor bothers me but it does. I guess I'd say it just tastes and feels too thick.

I see that walleye is on the list.  When my father in law was alive we'd fish for it in Lake Erie, catch a ton, and he was a very careful cleaner of fish and it was always bone free and didn't have a fish taste......good memories.  If he was alive today I would have picked that..

I do like seafood in general more than fish. All bivalves of course; and crab.

I not much of a fan of invertebrates.  Eating shrimp or crawfish is eating aquatic bugs.  Imagine how less popular they'd be in the North America or Europe if crustaceans lived on land.

Scallops taste OK though.

He's Austrian. The mentality there is strictly inland; the littoral is far away.

Although a weird and very inland mentality is also shown by the creator of this poll who (as I point out again) did not include haddock, which is hardly an obscure fish.

It's not obscure but I rarely pony up the money for it......very expensive compared to cod and other white fish.  Excellent choice though.

People in the central US tend not to eat much seafood because it's hard to get it really fresh and there's a stigma that it isn't nearly as good as if you get it on the coast...

So the favorites for non-local saltwater seafood tend to be the preserved varieties precisely for the flavor that the preserving process lends the fish.  Anchovies and sardines in mustard are a favorite.  Pickled herring, lox, and canned salmon or tuna are used frequently.

As for local fish... People swear by catching it and eating it as fresh as possible... But Friday fish fries are popular all year except when fishing is out of season (Late fall/early winter and spring).

Popular eating fish besides walleye:
Northern pike for pickling (though most throw them back)
Crappies
Panfish (bluegills, sunfish the most common)
Perch is a rare treat if you can get them big enough and without worms.

I've never known anyone to eat crayfish here but I bet they'd be tasty with melted butter.  We also have a plethora of clams/mussels but gathering them is a no no because they are threatened by water pollution.

Another excellent fish option that Jewish people were all about when I was a kid was the "whitefish." I have no idea what actual fish it was, but it was always served smoked, whole, cold, and for breakfast. There was a tiny Jewish grocery store, really just the size of convenience store, nearby when I was a kid. It's probably been closed for 15 years by now. I have no idea where to find it at a reasonable price in Memphis now. I've only seen at The Fresh Market and at around $16/lb, I can't ever bring myself to buy it. It looked like this.

Not quite

Lox is delicious, but dreadful in its bizarrely common combination with cream cheese. Fish and cheese should not be combined.

I love most fish, but I will make a mention of those orange, nearly raw packets of lox you can buy that go with almost everything or fine eaten alone.  Delish!

I'll tell you boys, when you're at a bar and feeling it....nothing like fried smelts.  The Eagles Club in Ambridge PA makes the best I've ever had......probably the nasty grease that makes them taste so good.

I've had a majority of those listed, but I really have to go with the popular answer: salmon. I've had it prepared many different ways and I enjoy all of them. Tuna would be my second choice. You really can't go wrong with it raw or as a steak.

Of the fish I haven't tried, fugu is the one I'd most like to try (though only at the most reputable of locations).

Where to begin? I love pretty much all seafood. I'll stay away from voting for shellfish out of the spirit of this poll, though (despite haviung particular weakness for all types)

Loving fried catfish. Smelts like Grumps said. The cod sandwich from Whorley's Market, salmon cooked just as Lief showed. All amazing.

The sushi fan in me has to give the nod to eel, fatty tuni, and sea urchin, though (unagi, toro & uni).

Never had fugu, but it's on my bucket list.
