Pure excellence.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to make an American Psycho reference.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. FB

He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

They should be glad that they were featured in one of the top twenty film scenes of all time, otherwise I don't think anyone would remember them.

Though of course the backing band on Costello's first album, before he formed The Attractions, was Clover– and Clover later became The News.

My mum has this weirdest thing for Huey Lewis (as in, despite being really atypical of the music she actually likes she really likes them). I don't get it though.

One of the biggest Freedom Bands of the 80s.  A personal favorite of mine.

Mediocre. Boosted by everyone's love of Back to the Future and American Psycho.

Huey Lewis made pretty mediocre pop music, but he should get credit for all the work he's done with disabled people.

That's crazy.  Huey Lewis and the News made pop music for 9-14 year olds.  It's simple, paint-by-numbers stuff really.  The production is schlocky and reeks of the worst of the 80s.  The lyrics are all meh.

Elvis Costello, on the other hand, wrote amazing lyrics, worked with producers like Nick Lowe and created timeless albums like Imperial Bedroom, Get Happy, King of America, My Aim is True and This Year's Model.

FB.

In terms of popular music, I think of the '60s and '70s as leading up the '80s, which was a type of climax, and then everything after the '80s was just down hill.

Grunge killed it.

wait wait wait....did somebody just say the 80s was the pinnacle of popular music?  Hair bands, dance music and Milli Vanilli?  Spawning things like leg warmers, parachute pants and 6" tall bangs?  Grunge (punk), didn't kill it, it put it out of it's misery.

The best thing about this thread is that Spiral seemingly thought American Psycho was some kind of obscure indie film that few people would get a reference to.

No, I wanted to see how long it would take until someone made the really obvious joke.

He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.  In '87, Huey released Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

In the early age of music video networks, I was glad when one of their's came on.  Well, ok, mostly one friend and I just waited for the video for "If This is It" to come on...and the song was also good.  Smiley  But, with the exception of that one and "Heart of Rock and Roll," with no videos and just the music playing, I didn't care for them that much.  Not an HB, but just didn't do much for me.
