Thankfully Minnesota banned civil forfeiture for anyone not convicted of a crime this year.

Disgusting behavior. Another argument to end Marijuana prohibition (although the behavior here goes much more deeper).

Another disgusting example of police brutality to people or in this case, ones possessions.

Agreed, civil forfeiture has become so abused that it simply cannot be tolerated.  It's a nice idea in theory, but in practice it has been a horror.

Time to start some serious downsizing of the police force.

Or we can forgo our chimp instincts and reduce the scope of our bad laws.

That's excellent.  Is anyone else doing this?

Which would imply we would likely have less need for police.

Yeah, civil forfeiture is really out of control in this country. I wish politicians were doing more about this.

Well as I said before Minnesota has thankfully restricted it and requires a criminal conviction to carry it out. I believe the only other state to do so though is North Carolina.

aah   hum... Lief, if only you could of been in class Sunday Morning. Isn’t this episode continuing the control that all democrats live for?
Rep. Dingell, a democrat and Michigan’s best communist; a leader controlling the power of the people is the essence of life for democrats. The only difference between Garner and Kowalski is… well… ah, hum… had a couple of puffs before returning home and said, “What’s up”. A tax collected or not IS the common problem for Garner and Kowalski to exist or not.

The issue isn't police, they only use powers they can use. The real problem is incompetent judges, who failed to strike out civil forfeiture as unconstituonnal. As often in the USA, judges are not doing enough to protect personal freedom.

The guy was arrested hours after reporting this to the media.

Just re-enforces that stereotype of the bullying mentality that cops are known for, and nobody believes those cops who say they hadn't heard of the report or that the timing is coincidental.  Well, you still shouldn't be stealing this guy's stuff before you arrest him, and you probably shouldn't be stealing it after that, either.

On a separate note, Deus naturae, I just wish to say that the swastika burning into my eyes every time I read one of your posts is starting to annoy me.  Yes, I could turn off signatures, but you could also get a better one.

It's time to stop this -- make sure that civil forfeiture before a conviction is to be done only if assets are necessary for the commission of a crime, or must be sold due to their perishability or rapid depreciation (proceeds to be held in trust). Otherwise, financial assets can be frozen without seizure and highly-liquid assets can be stored pending a lawful disposition.

Excellent news! I like this civil forfeiture thing and it seems like we could use more, not less, of it.
