Attorney Doug Dillard called the decision unconstitutional and “a blatant attack on First Amendment rights." He says the group will continue to fight and is strongly considering a federal lawsuit against the city.

Anti-Muslim protesters stood outside the meeting with signs such as “Ban Islam” and “Islam Wants No Peace!” but the issue of religion didn’t actually come up in the meeting itself.............

That statement was about the one respectable, worthwhile thing quoted from the anti-Mosque crowd in the entire article. Even though the logic to take that statement as grounds to prevent the Mosque from opening are totally wrong, the statement itself is, I admit, rather refreshing.

Muslims are a race?

No, but many if not most Muslims wouldn't be considered white (certainly not by racist American whites). And the fact that most Muslims around the world are not American and that most Americans are unfamiliar with the various and diverse respective cultures of over 1 billion Muslims (outside of what they get from the American media portrayal of Muslims as some monolithic group of would-be terrorists or terrorist-sympathizers) makes them very easy to categorize as "Other"-especially for racist American whites.
