If there is any person who can lose this senate race for the Democrats, it is Steyer. He will win the bay area but he will collapse in the central valley among hispanics (water and jobs issue) and quite possibly could in southern california as well. Rich, white liberals are not the swing vote in California, it is moderate to conservative minorities. A generic democrat wins that vote easily in this environment but things get interesting if it is an out of touch billionaire vs a moderate like Kashkari or Swearingen. In any case, California is more likely to vote in a Republican governor before a senator barring unusual circumstances.

It's California in a presidential year. There's no scenario outside of an R vs. R race that Democrats lose.

Steyer seems very interested, he's already started working with a potential team. Decision in the next few days. If he's in presumably those without a statewide profile stay out?

Neither did Jon Corzine when he first started, and he got elected Senator.

It doesn't really matter what Boxer wants, though.

holy christ, shut the f[inks] up steyer no one wants you to be their senator.

Is there any indication that Harris actually wants to run for senate, or are people just calling her the frontrunner because it makes sense that the AG would run for senate?

Beats Steyer, who I'd rather see run for Governor...especially against Newsom the egotist.

Unless Citizens United is overturned, Steyer should stay out of elected office.

Hoping for Harris or Newsom to run. Im not attracted to many of the other names being floated here and as a Los Angeles resident I dislike Villaraigosa with a passion.

Based on the DKE list, it seems there'll almost certainly be enough Democrats for R v. R to become a realistic possibility, but there may be too many Rs running as well for that to take place Tongue

And the field is a little bit clearer. The DSCC wants Harris.

Not really; Newsom and Harris were never going to run against each other in the first place. Villaraigosa and Steyer are still very likely to make the field murkier, and that's without mentioning lesser possibilities, like Sanchez, Tauscher, and Garamendi. And certainly some more people I haven't mentioned will run for this basically once-a-generation opportunity.

Regardless of what the DSCC decides (and they'll probably be more busy in competitive races than in a primary anyway, unless R v. R becomes the clearly likeliest result), if Steyer runs (and the signs he's sending out make it seem likely), he certainly becomes the best-funded candidate in the field.
