Assuming he won the nomination, would NE have been competitive? Would he have had a chance in a Kerrey/Bush/Perot race? How about just against Bush?

I think he would have won in either scenario, by a close-ish margin (within six points). He was a popular governor and both his Senate wins were pretty solid -- the second being especially impressive, since it was 1994. Things weren't as polarized pre-2000.

Maybe, but would he have won any southern states? Conversely, could he have put any other prairie states in play? Bush's margins in KS and SD weren't big IRL.

Kerrey wins! Bush was that unpopular.

Kerrey 294 EV / 40% PV
Bush 243 / 38% PV
Perot 1 / 21% PV
