Considering how much interest we have in maps here, I was curious: anybody here use ArcGIS or a similar software for making your maps?

I've used it on some occasions, but I actually prefer simple coloring of maps when possible (very therapeutic). Whenever I want a non-Paint solution, I usually turn to Google Fusion Tables for a solution.

No, but I've wanted to get more ArcGIS 'literate' for a while. When I need to generate a map quickly, I use Opean Heat Map.

That's generally what I use for my bigger maps, yes.

I've used ArcGIS on and off since.... 2003. First in a college class that actually tought me how to use it, then in a later class where I had to redistrict maps, and I also did a bit of GIS for political campaigning. And sometimes just for fun.

I use ArcGIS frequently at work. I prefer QGIS for home use, and that's what I would recommend to any serious hobbyist who wants to get into GIS software.

^^

Minus the work part...I just used to use ArcGIS.
