Despite Taylor's desires not to be an active president, the continuing issue of what to do with the territories of the Mexican Cession still lingered over American policy. With Wisconsin and Iowa set to enter the Union as free states in addition to many parts of the Mexican Cession, many Southerners desired admission for Texas and the creation of new slave states in the region. Taylor uncharacteristically vetoed the Compromise proposal brought before him, feeling that new states should be admitted unconditionally regardless of their slave or free status. Despite Taylor's threats to hang them, secessionists were elected to the South Carolina state government during the midterm elections. However, the geographic disparity of the Southern states with secessionist sentiment (neither of South Carolina's immediate neighbors desired secession) narrowly averted any of them acting on it.

Pierce is campaigning against Taylor on a platform of stopping the gridlock and admitting the Western states. Aside from this, the contest is largely a contest of personalities, once again.

Strategically stopping Pierce, sorry but Taylor has to stop the pretty boy.

President Taylor achieved a feat only previously accomplished by Presidents Washington and Van Buren of achieving a unanimous re-election. Even the Secessionist ticket in South Carolina lost control of the state legislature in the wake of Taylor's national sweep, awarding Taylor all of their electoral votes in a sign of support for staying in the Union.
