I never thought of Philly as being more liberal an area than NY and if anything more conservative. Here is what i found in 2008:

McCain won
63% of white vote in SI
56% in Queens
55% in Passaic
53% in Nassau
53% in Bergen
51% in Suffolk
51% in Union

Obama won
50% in Kings
50% in Middlesex
55ish in Essex
56% in Bronx
56% in Westchester
60ish in Hudson
80% in Manhattan

in Philadelphia, Obama won the white vote in all the major counties (this is 08 we're talking about), even in Chester. More impressive is that he won 56% in Camden County which I always thought had a large WWC population. Nonetheless, there's no equivalent of Manhattan either as Obama's best Philly area county was the city itself where he got in the low to mid 60s.

What do you think explains this? Obviously the all white areas in Bergen and Passaic are wealthier than all white areas in Burlington and Camden counties, but Obama also won the white vote in the mainline.

Whites in Pennsylvania are poorer and more likely than whites in NYC to be union members.

NYC on the otherhand, the whites there are more wealthier.... eh.... not as much but more so than whites in philly, and have a positive perception of republicans due to figures like Reagan. From 1994 to 2006 we had a moderate republican governor named George Pataki who was non-controversial, and then theres also Giuliani who helped clean up the city from a 30 year crime wave.

In comparison, whites in Pennsylvania don't have a positive figure from the republican party to refer to.

If Massachusetts never had the kennedy family then it would be much less democrat then it would of been all these years.

He's not just referring to whites in the city proper; but also whites from the Main Line, who are quite wealthy.

Staten Island is known as a conservative bastion in New York. Also, a lot of white ethnic enclaves in Queens and Bay Ridge in particular could best be described as Reagen Democrat though a lot of outer borough Germans and Italians also just have a long history of being Republican leaning.

I worked for a campaign in Bay Ridge this fall and I saw a ton of Republican yard signs and Republican signs outside businesses.

I also think that New York City has a conservative streak that on the surface a lot of people don't really appreciate. New York politicians (Democratic and Republican) tend to be strongly oriented towards a hawkish foreign policy and law and order tough on crime type policies. The hawkishness I think always existed in terms of having to be very pro-Israel to get elected in New York but was only enhanced by 9/11.

A lot of those "New York tough guys" turned out to be "New York whiny guys."

That doesn't really explain Manhattan, though.

The suburbs along the Delaware are blue-collar and unionized.  There ya go!

So basically they'll start splitting Republican soon and Democrats will abandon it like Missouri?

They already do "split" Republican.  Any white voting bloc, though, that is about half Democratic is pretty left-leaning for a white voting bloc.  New Jersey is so solid because its whites split down the middle and there is a huge minority population that votes overwhelmingly Democratic.

How did you calculate each county's white GOP vote?
