I know there's so much that is awful in the "Cromnibus", but I thought this was worth mentioning as good news for those on the left. The federal war on medical marijuana appears to be at its end.

The bill vetoed DC's legalization of pot.

Marijuana politics don't really break down neatly on partisan lines. We're seeing progress because a lot of conservatives don't want to spend money on a war on legalized drugs.

Eh, this seems completely symbolic to me. Federal funds were never really being used for that purpose under Obama.

That's not really true.  This is significant.

The GOP made a dumb*ss move on the pot thing. It annoys me - pot is an issue where Democrats can win some marginal voters, and these voters can be crucial in states like Colorado and Nevada.

Republicans need to let DC legalize pot. It's like gay marriage at this point - it's a settled question. It's not a matter of if DC will legalize pot. It will be when DC legalizes pot. If DC doesn't legalize pot, Maryland will be the one having a referendum on pot legalization (and I'll vote for it).

Wow

I recall some supportes of legalization claiming that legalizing it would end the recession. Chong of Cheech and Chong fame claimed recently in an interview that it shielded northern CA from the recession. I have always failed to see how such claims can be made with any credibility. At the end of the day, it is still one industry and the economy is composed of many.

Public opinion on pot legalization is to the point where this would be like a victory for civil unions at the same time that gay marriage lost. That wouldn't be a victory for gays at all. Well, DC legalization lost.

So the Democratic Party got one victory by forcing the federal government to do something that they should never have been doing in the first place. Gotcha.
