Let's do this, Atlas.

Here's the consensus thus far, courtesy of Album of the Year.

1.     The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream
2.   St. Vincent - St. Vincent
3.   FKA Twigs - LP1
4.   Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 2
5.   Aphex Twin - Syro
6.   Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire for No Witness
7.   Caribou - Our Love
8.   Sharon Van Etten - Are We There
9.   Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence
10.   Taylor Swift - 1989
11.   Sun Kil Moon - Benji
12.   Flying Lotus - You're Dead!
13.   Future Islands - Singles
14.   Todd Terje - It's Album Time
15.   Beck - Morning Phase
16.   Mac DeMarco - Salad Days
17.   Swans - To Be Kind
18.   Perfume Genius - Too Bright
19.   Spoon - They Want My Soul
20.   Jenny Lewis - The Voyager
21.   Jack White - Lazaretto
22.   Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Piņata
23.   The Bug - Angels and Devils
24.   Jessie Ware - Tough Love
25.   Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots

A pretty solid year IMO. I'm actually inclined to agree with the "consensus" choice thus far - The War on Drugs album is fairly easily my favourite thing I've heard all year and I'm glad to see they're getting some recognition. I'd probably put the SVE record at #2 although I'm also happy that it's rated highly.

Where I have to fairly violently disagree is on that St. Vincent eponymous album, which I loathed. I liked Actor a lot, and enjoyed Strange Mercy, but overexposure to David Byrne has clearly ruined her. Considering it's self-titled it's a shame that it comes off like a tedious affectation. And the less said about people apparently preferring a Taylor Swift album to Benji the better.

Sturgill Simpson for Metamodern Sounds

Both excellent choices that I should have included.

I will only say that you and I literally have the opposite taste in music.  I listened to 15 seconds of an Issues song.  Angsty, whiney, nobody understands me and my rather insignificant, everyday problems.... I had to stop before I simultaneously cried, laughed, and threw up.

Like I said... Different tastes.  I certainly dont place my taste in music higher than yours... But I have...  Issues... With your #1 selection

I really don't know. I'd rank 1989 a lot higher than, uh, probably the vast majority of other posters, but not at the top. Popular Problems is an interesting choice--'Almost Like the Blues' alone probably puts it in the top ten for me--but I'm not sure that would be my number one either.

I don't really keep up with new music much, but I liked Coldplay's new album a lot. U2's new album was a disappointment.

Before I saw your username, I thought this post was from BRTD and I was encouraged...but then I remembered that I have BRTD on ignore and that he would never be this nice to me about my music taste.

Still, at least you were respectful about it. That's what it's all about.

This was kind of a boring year for records IMO. A lot of those albums that were listed were pretty good but certainly don't represent the best work produced most of those artists.

It's embarrassing how much I seem to have checked out of what's new.  I don't think I've really kept up with more than a couple artists since 2010 or so.  I guess, given my usual pattern I'll end up unearthing a whole bunch of now-current stuff in 2020 or so.

With that in mind, Spoon's They Want My Soul wins this year pretty much by default.

Platinum was probably the best country album of the year, for whatever that's worth. Apart from that, I agree with smilo that it was generally a weak year in the genre.

Music quality has really dropped over the last 5 or so years.
