Also, since when did BBC News have a dedicated "Australia" section? I clicked on it without even noticing before I looked at it.

It does seem pretty noteworthy that we haven't heard anything from the hostage-takers yet even despite their central location.  They're across the street from a news station and still haven't said anything.

Which is part of the reason why they think it might have been accidental, the suggestions being they might have been planning something publicly in Martin Place itself but were spotted or spooked and ran into the cafe and have holed themselves up.

But again... no one knows.

This map produced by the BBC and shows the number of prominent locations that might suggest some random chocolate store wasn't his intended destination. Something that doesn't prove anything but that I thought might prove informative for those of us unfamiliar with Sydney and where things are in it (myself included):

The gunman has been identified as Man Haron Monis.  He has a "colorful" record.

And all of a sudden, we know him. He even had a page on Wikipedia. But accessory to murder... oh dear.

Stuff seems to be going down there now.  Some loud bangs heard, and more hostages run out of the building.  Saw someone on Twitter say that police were going into the building, but it's all pretty unclear, and I'm not near a TV.

Pretty sure it's over now, with at least 1 death. The person receiving CPR may make it, but doesn't look good.

No great insight, just sadness that this happened

NSW Police confirm siege over; media reports say two dead, and also a police officer received a bullet wound in the head (not sure if that was one of the deaths).

ABC being responsible and not reporting it, but it's coming from multiple other sources now that the dead are indeed Monis and a hostage.

Also I made the mistake of watching the videos of the hostages discussing the demands of Monis. They're floating around, I recommend not watching them.

Sad

Horrible that at least 1 hostage died during the storming.

It seems the terrorist was basically a violent lunatic with severe mental problems. The decision to storm was probably the best solution, because it might have turned out much worse considering his bizarre behaviour and he might have killed many hostages at a later point.

Clearly a horrible situation.

But the media is once again making the same mistakes like in other tragedies such as Columbine, by broadcasting the IS flag in the window.

The Islamo-fascists should not be given a platform and any propaganda should not be published !

The hostage taker was a Shia, so it's safe to say he was not an Islamic State supporter.

I've read though that at one point he demanded an IS flag to be brought into the store and talk with Abbott, according to hostage reports about his demands.

No; he converted to Sunni Islam last week, apparently.

Not quite. The article I posted above (from the Sydney Morning Herald) has a quote they attribute to him that says "I used to be a Rafidi, but not any more. Now I am a Muslim, Alhamdu Lillah." I searched at and least one result seems to use Rafidi as a slur towards all Shias. Wikipedia states that "the term is used today by Salafis to refer to Shia Muslims", citing this book that says as much.

Nasty stuff, though at least it didn't turn into a massacre (which is always the main worry in this sort of situation). Guy responsible seems to have been a right charmer.

Local media now saying that a third person has died, possibly of a heart attack, and that the hostage taker fired first.

....WTF! Said local (Australian!) media is now saying 5 people were shot in Philly. Surreal and depressing place to hear about such a thing.

The guy was a nutcase - sadly, two people were killed, more injured...

Just terrible.

Woke up to the awful news of the deaths, this is just awful! Cry I'll be buying some Lindt chocolate today in their memory. And may Man Monis have EVERYTHING at the book thrown at him.

Well, at least he can't harm anyone else now. My thoughts and prayers go to the families and friends of the deceased hostages, the surviving hostages, injured or non-injured, and their families and friends. Even if the hostages  escaped injury, they'd still be extremely traumatised by being held hostage.
