Would he have won in 1968? Would he have died in office?

He would've got crushed. Hard. Probably in the primary, but he might've been established enough to make it through a primary. But still, crushed.

No. primaries weren't that important those days. LBJ, as a master politican, would have clinched the nomination with or without Bobby living.

I also think he had defeated Nixon in a close contest.

One thing of importance to remember is Nixon's screwing with the peace talks on the eve of the election. Johnson knew it was going on but for whatever reason chose not to intervene. Had it been Johnson's own presidency on the line, I have little doubt that he would've accepted such malfeasance. If the peace talks are taken off the table entirely, it's of little doubt that Johnson would've been crushed. However, as I recall, when it seemed like Johnson had finally negotiated an end, that was a game changer and Humphrey started gaining in the polls.

I don't think LBJ could have stopped Nixon from convincing the South Vietnamese to hold off for better terms.  LBJ would have probably been able to keep the nomination from McCarthy, though if Bobby Kennedy survives the campaign he wins the nomination. LBJ does slightly worse overall than Humphrey did in the general.

Johnson would lose in 1968 like Carter did in 1980

that's actually very close to what I have in terms of the % vote for the incumbent.

No way Johnson wins the election in 1968.

The nation was falling apart over Vietnam, riots in the streets.

Johnson was the focal point of discontent.

Nixon has an easy win.
