What are the chances that someone inside Sony hacked themselves in order to gin up publicity for this?

They've released some pretty embarrassing, not to mention privacy violating (SSNs, medical records), things that I doubt they'd want out there.

As for shutting the movie down, it doesn't look like it would've been good anyways, so no loss there.

Indeed. North Korea comes across to us like a comic story-book villain because they want to come across as a silly and fundamentally not concern-worthy story-book villain- much as was the case with, say, Idi Amin or Khadhafi.
