I know Jeb is not running for Senate like Thompson but both were popular former Governor's who were out of office for a long time and came back in faced hostile primaries and bombed in the GE.

Tommy Thompson's last name isn't Bush and Jeb Bush has not [yet] "bombed in the GE", and Tommy Thompson wasn't in the GE so I'm not understanding what you're saying.

Thompson was the republican senate nominee in Wisconsin in 2012:

In context, it seems like he means in the Presidential election and I think he means primaries instead of GE. Regardless, Jeb Bush hasn't bombed in GE since he left office.

Very solid potential comparison. Popular former governor who might have lost his game. If hillary wins Florida then it's a great comp.

There are a few differences.

Jeb Bush will have a tougher primary. Tommy Thompson had name recognition, many endorsements and a resume far more impressive than his opponents (former Governor and cabinet member) and he still just got 34 percent. Eric Hovde, a businessman who currently lacks a wikipedia entry, finished second with 30 percent.

Thompson basically ran like a standard Republican in a weak year for the party. He got the same percentage of the vote as the Romney/ Ryan ticket did. In a strong year for the party (IE- one without a charismatic incumbent) a standard Republican will be enough.
