This has been decades in the making, glad to see he's doing something about it.

GOP bashing Obama's Cuba deal b/c of their human rights abuses? You guys were just defending the torture and rape of detainees LAST WEEK.

I think the Cubans would rather have a rectal feeding than Charlie.

As they say, "Only Obama could go to Cuba."

I'm not sure they would say that, and he hasn't been there... yet. Hopefully the things normalisation advocates say will happen- that trade and economic changes will comple political change- are correct, because they've won the day it seems, according to the BBC:

Also, the embargo has apparently cost the Cuban economy $1.1 trillion since 1960. That's an enormous sum considering it's such a small country.

All I'll say is that I hope this doesn't end up being the proverbial thrust that undoes the advances of the socialist revolution in Cuba in the realm of property relations. It would, however, be nice if this did lead to a general renewal of democratic procedure on the island (which has, unfortunately, lapsed to a great degree as bureaucratic rule set in in the 1970s) and truly independent trade unions (that aren't fronts for the CIA, that is) in Cuba. I don't know whether or not to view this as a step forward or a step toward the abolition of the deformed workers' state on the island. Only time will tell.

One hopes it will. But the best news of all:

Good on him!

Didn't we open up some trade with Cuba back in 2010 or 2011? Like they needed telephone poles, auto parts, and electrical goods, and we allowed certain firms to conduct business? I don't know why he didn't just do it then.

Wow! I didn't realize that the Vatican played such a crucial and active role in the normalization process.
Pope Francis is such a FF!

In 20-30 years were all going to look back and wish we had another Obama. A true FF. And of course, a stupid response from the GOP: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/12/17/marco-rubio-cuba-obama_n_6342348.html
