A solid majority, 52%, also disagree with Dianne Feinstein and others that the torture report should have been released.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/polling/intelligence-committee-congress-senate/2014/12/17/b36f02e8-8518-11e4-abcf-5a3d7b3b20b8_page.html

Further, and perhaps the most disturbing part, of the 54% who thought the CIA intentionally misled the White House, Congress, and the public about its activities, about 39% thought it was justified in doing so. A solid majority (53%) thought torture produced important information, despite the findings of the Senate report that it did not. Pretty devastating poll for opponents of torture, IMO.

I think the issue is that torture may not actually work. But if it was used the public has no problem with the CIA using it against people who condone sex slavery, fly planes into buildings, and slaughter school children.

I think it's a lack of details. Knowledge of the rectal feeding would lower the rating. I think most people just imagine John Wayne punching the inks out of a terrorist when they think of this issue.

Even if people knew the finer details, they wouldn't still care. They would still probably back the CIA, because they see the detained as foreigners. That would be the wrong thing to do, but that's how most Americans view the situation.

But truth be told, there are people in Guantanamo Bay who probably do deserve rectal feeding and torture. Because they are actual terrorists. They should be made to suffer - I have no reservations about this - because they deliberately aid and abet terrorist attacks on innocents, here and in the Middle East. And we forget that while there are innocents in Guantanamo Bay (who should be richly compensated for their suffering and apologized to profusely), we forget that real evil lies in that detention center. And they should not be sympathized or pitied for their suffering (or mind you, given a court of law). Let's counter this view of America being a terrible nation for torturing with the fact that evil men and women do live there and they are detained there because of their posed threat against the United States and humanity.

That said, from a practical viewpoint, torture is not efficient to gather information. If I thought it was an efficient way to gather information, I would wholeheartedly endorse it. It is, however, a highly inefficient way to gather information. You get flawed information, because the tortured would tell you anything he wants to.  It's better to go through other tactics to coerce information out of them.

The American public supports the position of the party that just won the 2014 elections, rather than the one that just lost the 2014 elections. Go figure.

The Democratic party is now a conservative party with a liberal wing; the Republican Party has practically gone fascist. Thanks to Karl Rove we ended up with a majority-of-a-majority system, and Barack Obama wasn't ruthless enough to exploit such to entrench power for his Party. It will again be majority-of-a-majority rule in Congress in early January.

If a majority of Republicans support torture, then we will get torture. It is a far shorter leap from torturing foreigners to torturing Americans than it is from torturing cats to torturing people. Got a kid abusing dogs or cats? Get him help before he becomes a murderer!

I'm skeptical that support (or lack thereof) for torturing terrorists is part of a political spectrum.

I wonder what sort of results forcing the terrorists to read some threads here would result in.

It's pretty simple really, people are reading way too much into what 'political' elements can be drawn from this.

The US has a soft spot for their 'institutions' and assumes foreigners are out to get them. "Well they wouldn't be being tortured for no reason would they?" etc.

Is this poll designed to make me consider defending Dianne Feinstein? Ridiculous.

That's not shocking to me. Most Americans want freedom until security is even a little bit in jeopardy, and torture seems to fall into the "do anything possible for a little security" category. It's awful.
