I know that Wendell Willkie, the Republican party's (dark horse) candidate in 1940, died in 1944 at age 52. But what if he had lived on? In this scenario, Republicans again nominate the charismatic lawyer for a second time. Who would have been his running mate in this election against incumbent Harry S. Truman? Discuss with maps.

Why would the nation have a reason to elect a Dewey without experience over the man they elected in real life?

I could see Wallace endorsing Willkie, who is perceived as soft on communism, and instead of Wallace there is a conservative non-segregationist candidacy such as John W. Bricker. In which case, Willkie wins VT and ME, perhaps NY and ND, and maybe another state depending on his VP.
