Also because, you know, not everyone celebrates Christmas.

Merry Christmas, but the religious nuts getting upset over it make me want to say happy holidays.  I really don't give a sh**t.

Merry Christmas, although I'm not offended if you say Happy Holidays to me (religious conservative, but not the sort that say, throws Harry Potter books on the fire).

Merry Christmas. It's largely a secular holiday anyway so it doesn't really matter.

Interchangeable, but lean #2 just to annoy those annoyed by it.

Where is the "Who cares, this debate is stupid" option?

I usually say 'Merry Christmas' although sometimes I'll say 'have a good holiday.' I really don't think about it.

I'll take a politically correct warrior that wants me to say 'Happy Holidays' over a right-winger that wants to rant to me about some War on Christmas that is going on, though.

In Austria, we tend to split it between "Merry Christmas" for the 3 Christmas days and then on Dec. 31 we say "Gutes/Schönes/Frohes* neues Jahr" (Good/Happy new year) or "Guten Rutsch" (Have a good slide or ride).

"slide/ride" as in "slide/ride into the new year".

* "frohes" is a term that mostly (northern) Germans + people from Vienna would use though.

In local dialect, I would just say "Guads nojs", which means "Good new (one)".

...

I would never say "Happy holidays" (Schöne Feiertage ?) though. Sounds weird, or something like a person from (northern) Germany would say.

Voted for "merry Christmas".

I don't think this poll is really relevant for other languages than English.

Option 2. Happy Holidays just doesn't roll off the tongue as well.

I don't mind Christmas cards which say either though, same with Seasons Greetings.

Happy Christmas I use as well sometimes. That's more consistent with greeting other people on other holidays anyway.

Nobody is actually annoyed by Merry Christmas though. It's just the right wingers that get their panties in a bunch whenever someone says "Happy Holidays".

I suppose I say Marry Christmas more often, although I don't really care.
