So, I feel a bit out of the loop on this one (I've been around here for 3 or so months).

Why do so many people have this as their avatar? It's been confusing me, and I've now come to the conclusion it must be something that's supposed to be ironic.

Yeah, Mechaman was a notable poster round here who used that avatar and he was put on a temp ban for having a sock account. It's a solidarity thing. People did it when opebo was banned too.
