It doesn't translate well on a cell phone camera, you probably need special equipment to get an accurate pic. But it's very awesome. The whiteness instead of the pitch blackness of night is very nice looking, though not if you're an astronomer or stargazer. Also works better in rural areas, in the city there's too much light pollution and distractions around.

Wow! A grey sky in Minnesota looks so much different than a grey sky in a decent state!

Well I imagine the folks in more southern areas don't ever have what looks like it due to the lack of snow.

You guys the moon looks so awesome right now!  Seriously, it's mind-blowing how huge and intense it is!  Luckily I was able to capture it on my cell phone, so you could see for yourselves:

Joe, you didn't take that picture on your "cell phone" because then it would be a camera. So Newt wants to know: what should we call that device?

Chilly winter nights under the reflective glow of urban light pollution makes you feel cozier.  These nights also tend to be milder than clear ones so theyre nice for being out in the evening.

I prefer it to be dark at night.

That's what I dislike about when it snows down here - the night sky turns this weird grey-orange color and it gets really quiet.  It's downright creepy.

Phil can crap on MN all he wants.  We have rising wages, good schools, and 3.7% unemployment.

what is it, just goes from a dim grey to a dark and back again?  Ithaca was similar, it wore on me after a while.  (not just that, but the cold, wind, ice, and the fact that Ithaca is basically built on the slope of a mountain - not a great place for human habitation)

Am I the only one who can envision those simply being poor pictures taken of a beautiful snowy Northern sky? Sad

Not bad, but it's no winter Virginia sky

@BRTD: I see someone was hibernating during the big Polar Vortex that hit the South

@Del Tachi: The same thing happens in Virginia, but I actually like it when it does that. Complete darkness is only fun when the sky is clear.

This is more or less to what brtd is referring... The urban light glow reflected both off the coouds and the snow.

The snow muffles sound so everything feels closer in...in a cozy way.  Its hard to explain.

Yeah as I admitted it doesn't work well on a cell phone camera. Snowguy's is much better.

Also serves as a nice contrast to the depressing as hell daytimes that are just white and dreary with the sun hard to see and everything white and bland. At night the sky is somewhat illuminated and it's actually lighter than summers, which is part of why winter nights can see kind of festive in Minnesota.

I don't even think you could see the moon if it were full in those pics. Tongue

Especially in the summer I do like to stargaze, so horrible. The sky itself also looks frozen. No.

Wouldn't trade it for any other. Overcast sky is the best sky, IMHO.

That's what the sky looks like in any city where it's snowed. It's not specific to Minnesota.

But to answer the poll question, yes it's my favorite.

that's one thing that struck me in Ithaca, after spending my whole life in greater NYC area.  not that Ithaca is the Mecca for lack of light pollution, the night sky is much more exquisite.  makes you realize how 100 yr old Abraham felt during his fateful talk w/the Lord.

However, the down side to the lack of light pollution is how crazy dark the inside of a house in the country gets at night. If you need to get out of bed for anything, it can be hard to orient yourself.

Who knows? No one in MN can see the sky for 90% of the winter.
