No doubt this has been done before, but I compiled the results for 2014 thinking they'd be close.  (Finally, a prediction about 2014 that turned out accurate!)

This is the combination of ME, VT, NH, MA, CT & RI in midterm years.  In presidential years, only VT and NH hold gubernatorial elections.  'Other' includes write-ins and all minor parties.

Rhode Island held gubernatorial elections every two years until 1996.

1986 is where things got tricky, as I was unable to find a New Hampshire result that was something other than a percentage (can't find anything for Connecticut or Maine either).  Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Vermont have comprehensive data going back to the mid 70s.

1998
Republican - 2019962 (48.47%)
Democratic - 1767835 (42.42%)
Other - 379528 (9.11%)

1996
Democratic - 463719 (61.71%)
Republican - 253482 (33.73%)
Other - 34233 (4.56%)

1994
Republican - 2496201 (53.02%)
Democratic - 1542442 (32.76%)
Other - 668979 (14.21%)

1992  (now includes RI)
Democratic - 681239 (55.54%)
Republican - 500597 (40.81%)
Other - 44775 (3.65%)

1990
Republican - 2226913 (45.74%)
Democratic - 2030212 (41.70%)
Other - 611470 (12.56%)

1988
Republican - 575933 (52.21%)
Democratic - 504062 (45.69%)
Other - 23177 (2.10%)
