I'd go with Option 3, since the populace actually voted for Reagan who was pretty much Goldwater with subtle racism, a smoother tongue and Falwell-baiting.

Humphrey was the closest thing to Stevenson to even get close, and look how that ended up.

What year is the election happening in? Now? 1952? 1956? 1964?

I wanted to leave the time vague on purpose, but I guess when one says they want it in general it kinda has to mean in the present where the most hindsight is had.

But if you want to look at those years, by all means go ahead.

Goldwater would definitely win today, and I would vote for him.

Goldwater, and he would lose even worse today than he did in 1964. He would be attacked as a racist constantly,  and his opposition to Social Security and Medicare would lose him many votes from olds and religious types, both key conservative constituencies.

Goldwater/Goldwater. Stevenson was a good guy who just didn't have the chutzpuh to inspire voters.

Goldwater was very critical of the religious right. Also, his support for abortion and gay rights wouldn't play well with that constituency.

He was a Unitarian if that helps. Pro-life of course, but virtually everybody were back then.

Ok. Given Goldwater's opposition to Social Security (a pet issue of mine), I'll cast a tepid vote for Adlai.

What I meant is how his opposition to Social Security and Medicare would hurt him with religious voters, not his support for abortion and gay marriage.

I meant the latter, I just forgot to write it.
