Des Moines.

Smaller cities that still have strong amenities, a livable and logical layout, and that are sanely designed and have solid public transit and a diversity of weather are far preferable to sprawly Sun Belt hellholes.

Curious how traininthedistance is going to vote for this...

What the hell's to be curious about?  My vote is obvious to everyone, for multiple reasons.

Des Moines, only because I couldn't cope with the climate... well, that and you know, Florida.

Uh, you do realize Des Moines has plenty of sprawly suburbs too right? It's just that the actual city is much nicer. In fact Des Moines has an interesting distinction in that the city proper on the northern city limits cuts off right where the sprawl begins, and there's a spread of unincorporated territory between it and its northern suburbs, (which is actually where the motel I stayed at while I was there was located), which helps keep it insulated from the terribleness.

FWIW, Des Moines streets are more narrow than Minneapolis', and unlike in Minneapolis parking is allowed on only one side on the majority of them, which can be annoying, but is still the more urban way to go. Not saying it's more urban as a whole, but I did find that rather noteworthy about it.

Des Moines.

If it were Ft. Myers, maybe I'd reconsider. But otherwise why would I choose a conservative and absurdly hot place over a more progressive place that gets cool sometimes?

I prefer not to have to ponder such a Hobson's choice.

I know very little about both cities but based on the little I know I would say Des Moines.  If I did some research I might have a different opinion.

Though I don't share with the Atlas fetish of small, cold, white, liberal hipster cities, Jacksonville is complete sh!t. Des Moines is just okay.

I feel like this is the point to remind the forum that aren't you technically an Iowan farmer in addition to all your many other hats?

That's...a terrible description of Des Moines. Madison or Iowa City, maybe, but Des Moines?

Perhaps most amusing about that description is the fact that Des Moines isn't even all that white. It's almost a third non-white in fact.

As to the pot bust, no, not really. It just added another interesting story to my growing portfolio of non age appropriate as it were adventures in recent years. Smiley Winterset is quite charming for a small town, although it sure isn't Hudson (one is dullsville, one is not). My main beef with Iowa, based on experience, is that its gene pool has been so degraded over the generations by massive out migration, that about the only intelligent person left there is Angus. Oh wait, didn't Angus move to Lancaster, PA?

Yes, I forgot about the Iowa farm bit. Not much activity there. We sold off the un-developable bottom land corn fields which are subject to flooding from the Middle River, and kept the upland and land along the roads for future development. So someday, I will get into the subdivision business I guess, if still alive then. I have done about everything else there is to do when it comes to real estate, so I might as well cap it off by becoming a real estate developer. Tongue
