“I talked about it many times and these things require a serious approach. How do I understand a serious approach? We all must do our job, work where we work, and stop thinking about keeping such things as a company phone or ratings,” Putin said at his annual press conference on Thursday.

Putin is doing what American politicians do not.  American politicians have stated numerous times that they ONLY care about ratings.  Ratings win elections.  Ratings result in short sighted politics, which results in no long range future for a country.  Both short term and long term solutions must be implemented to prevent myopia and distopia.

You're seriously going to hold up Putin as an example of someone with an admirable leadership style?

When you can dictate what the votes will be, you don't have to worry about ratings unless they're so low even the people who see only your propaganda don't believe you really won the election.

How are Putin's war games helpful for the long-term interests in Russia?

Remember the time Russia had those wildfires and Putin ordered Russia's only firefighting plane to stop so he could go get a photo-op acting like he was doing something to help by flying it around for a bit

Or how about the time a dissident journalist got killed with polonium

Putin goes to far greater lengths than American politicians to boost his approval ratings, in spite of the fact that he's already fixing the elections anyway

Well, considering he also cooks the ratings...

I conjecture we have another paid Russian troll here. Let us wait a bit to see what he does, but I would not really think a conversation is warranted here.

Doesn't Putin's entire career hinge on corrupt relationships with elites, right-wing populism, being in the right place at the right time to take credit for positive developments beyond his control, and deflecting criticism using the contents of his authoritarian tool kit? His joyride will only last for so long as he keeps finding ways to pin Russia's problems on others. It will be tougher to pull off than before if the economy languishes for a prolonged period of time.

I bet Putin truly does care but will never admit to it to help preserve his carefully-sculpted public persona.

Uh oh, I think Putin might have just broken one of J.J.'s rules of elections.

Well at least he didn't win because of the Reverse Bradley Effect.

Of course he does. All rulers do.

Rule of thumb: Politicians who brag about not caring about ratings care the most about ratings.
