Is it some type of Austrian tradition to capture children?

No. Option 2. Never heard of it.

Closest thing might be the Grinch? Even so, the Grinch is not significant. It's more a cartoon character than a traditional anti-Santa figure.

Nonetheless, that's interesting, if not a little disturbing.

Too much hyperbole and Austria-bashing in this thread.

So, there's 1 or 2 bad guys who kept someone locked up in a basement here a while ago.

The US produces serial killers, people who go on shooting sprees or people who lock other people away on a weekly (if not daily) basis ... And nobody gives a rats ass about it because it's so common already.

It's Austria-teasing, not Austria-bashing.

And I have to say, at least one Austrian laughs his ass of at reading this thread Tongue

Nah.  If I were adopt some foreign Christmas custom, I'd pick Iceland's Yule Cat.  If nothing else, it would give Santa a reason to give kids practical gifts of clothing as well as his traditional toys.

Speaking of which, Scandinavia and the World just issued a comic about it: http://satwcomic.com/christmas-kitten
