"15 Diseases of the Curia"

Paraphrasing a few but the list is:

1. Narcissism
2. Anxiety and stress
3. Lack of emotion
4. Overplanning
5. Noncooperation
6. Passions, whims, and obsessions
7. Vainglory
8. Hypocrisy
9. Gossip
10. Deification (of authority figures)
11. Indifference (to the struggles of others)
12. "The Funeral Face" (pessimism, strictness, *Snowstalker/BossTweed edginess*)
13. Hoarding
14. Cliques
15. Profit, exhibitionism, and slander

More proof that ODF would be better off Catholic.

Well, since this was de-classfied as a mental illness in the last DSM, I'm glad it's at least still a sin.

I tried coming up with a counterargument to nearly everything on here, but it was just getting ridiculous. This whole list in nonsense. Almost everything here is mental illness (including narcissism despite what the DSM says - that can be very serious and is one of the mental illnesses that require the most immediate treatment - the rest are not horrible). The ones that are not illness are either not bad things (perhaps they get in the way of living a flawless life where we are contributing every moment though sometimes we need a break) or in some cases good things.

Despite what some psychiatrists would have you believe, mental "illnesses" don't result from biological, neurological, or biochemical defects/imbalances. It's ridiculous to proscribe medical treatment (mind-altering drugs) for conditions that at their root aren't medical. The DSM is a sham.

That's true of many mental illnesses but certainly not all of them.

Well, yes, but that's because its definition of what constitutes a healthy mind is clinical and joyless to the point of unintentional comedy and the distinctions between different diagnoses are political and often arbitrary, not because the entire concept of mental illness is illegitimate.

Why, Sanchez? A bit more uprightness in your ecclesiastical hierarchy not to your liking?

God bless the Holy Father.

What causes them then?

Demons. At the very least, there's as much evidence for that view as there is for the view that their cause is medical.

But seriously, a lot of things. Traumatic experiences, toxic relationships, etc. Things that can't be "cured" by pumping people full of addictive, mania and depression-inducing drugs.

I think it is worth noting that mental illness itself is heavily culturebound. Anorexia as we understand it today did not exist in any meaningful sense before the 1980s. What used to be understood as Anorexia was a very different disorder that is still rarely seen. Unfortunately, the promulgation of its current form has had a deleterious effect on those few afflicted by its older incarnation, because psychiatric professionals refuse to accept that it is different from what they are used to seeing.

No cliques, gossip or narcissism? Are we sure these aren't geared towards high schools?

Vatican watchers would argue that the Curia has an awful lot in common with the average American high school...
