Missouri State Rep Rick Brattin (R) introduces a bill that would require a woman to get the approval of the fetuses father to have an abortion, expect in cases of legitimate rape. If the bill gains wide Republican support there's no stopping it as Republicans have super-majorities in both branches of the legislature.  Link.

It strikes me as a purely cynical attempt by pro-lifers to restrict abortion by whatever means available to them. If abortion is murder, the father consenting to it doesn't change that. This is the sort of thing that gives ammunition to leftist partisans who accuse conservatives of misogyny.

Wow, usually the pro-lifers are a lot less blatant than this.

Yeah, it really is. This is how I feel about abortion restrictions with elaborate sets of exceptions, too.

Can men stop legislating things that should be a women's decision? [/end talking point]

Wouldn't most fathers give consent anyway? I highly doubt the average American dad would want their pride and joy to become a parent at sixteen, right?

It's referring to the fetus' father, not the mother's father.

Akin, get your head out of Missouri law.

If you're going to do a rape exception, do it for all rape cases, not just the ones you personally think are "legitimate" or "unpreventable". As pro-life as I am, I would not sign this.

I've never understood the pro lifers that allow exceptions. Seems hypocritical, dive into the deep end of the crazy pool.

After all, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.

My expectation for this thread was the law would require the woman to ask her father for permission. So thanks for at least jumping over that low bar, Missouri Lawmaker.

If you read the article, he doesn't appear to be using the term the way Akin did. He appears to be using the term "legitimate" as in a rape actually occurred, as opposed to saying a rape occurred just so you can have the abortion. As I understood it, Akin was saying pregnancy resulting from a rape was impossible so if a pregnant woman claims she was raped, she must be lying.

Not the best choice of words.

So what would happen if the father isn't known in the first place?

Poorly thought out Missouri proposed legislation by someone who is probably a little known nutcase. I'm not worried about this becoming law. There are better pro-life laws out there to pass that can achieve the same goal as this.

Would such a law prohibit an abortion mandated by the life or health of the mother  -- let us say an ectopic pregnancy? Prohibiting her from having an abortion would be a death sentence for her.
