I think it's also worth nothing that AIPAC has explicitly come out against these amendments, arguing they would sink the legislation.

Wonderful news! The less input the Senate has on this, the better.

Mitch McConnell proves once again that he can't hold a candle as a congressional leader compared to the Prince of Nevada.

Hopefully one day Republicans will be able to put their differences aside and reach around the aisle to Republicans for compromise.

Alas, I don't see it happening any time soon.

There is an important distinction between having to have Congress approve (then a majority could kill the deal), versus having Congress not approve it (which is the way it is written), which means that Obama could veto the non approval. Thus the way it is written would effectively require a two thirds vote of Congress to override, which is highly unlikely. It really leaves things as they are now, without any bill. In the end, for Congress to stop Obama, a two thirds majority will be needed. Thus it seems like a waste of time to pursue this, as written.

It seems to me that Congress should just go home, and Obama can do his thing. Congress can refuse to lift sanctions, but if other nations lift them, that will not have much effect. Unless the sanctions coalition hangs together, resistance is futile. Even if a new President reverses what Obama did, absent other nations joining the sanctions regime, or keeping it in place, that will not have much effect. So the options are limited. It is not even clear to me that bombing will do much good other than slow things down a bit, if it comes to that. The whole thing sucks.
