Catharsis is good. I tend to put mine in the middle of other people's threads, sometimes off topic, because creating threads for the purpose probably garners too much attention for my tastes, but it's probably more respectable just to come right out and rant at the creation of a thread.
The timing was strange--I suspect that it was entirely political--so the Kantian in me is a bit suspect. On the other hand, I'm a big fan of normalizing relations with Cuba, so the pragmatist in me approves. I do think that it'll be nice to be able to visit Cuba. ("Next year in Havana!") I've visited all of the four greatest antilles except Cuba, in fact, and I'd very much like to visit that one as well. I don't begrudge Obama for waiting. He may have wanted to do this for a long time, but felt that it might have hurt his re-election chances back in the beginning, or hurt the democrats in congress in 2014, if he had acted sooner.
