If it were about Farage, for example, I wouldn't take it seriously.

I would think this describes my attitude toward social issues, but I am not sure if questioning such a fundamental position bars me from being a true Scotsman.

Depends on how you define social conservative.  I'm pro-choice and I consider myself socially conservative.  I think there should be at least two categories of social conservative a mean one and a nice one.  The nice ones leave other people alone as long as those people leave them alone.  The mean ones want to run everyone's lives.

I don't like abortion but I realize clamping down on it does more harm than good.  I would much rather have good sex ed and free contraception.  There is nothing "conservative" about lying to teenagers and restricting their access to contraception.

Honestly we would have a much calmer well ordered society if better sex ed and free contraception was available.  I simply don't see how having a bunch of broke uneducated people spitting out babies in tumultuous relationships makes society more "conservative".

How about you just PM Flo?

Or better yet, why not start a new thread? This one has more pages than Dave usually likes threads to.

I don't think the pat 'libertarian/authoritarian' axis maps as well to 'social liberal/conservative' as a lot of commentators and two-dimensional political quizzes seem to think it does.

Edit to add: I can somewhat understand their misinformed belief that an election won by Democrats must have been stolen. There are two Americas at this point: one is urban/suburban and educated, the other is rural and uneducated. The latter is Trump's base of support. They live so deeply in their little bubble with no experience of the outside world aside from FOX News, right-wing radio, and Drudge Report that they could not possibly comprehend that the majority of Americans reject Trump and his beliefs, and do not hold such angry, bigoted viewpoints as them.

At the time, he was deserving of it. He's toned it down since then, however, and I fully support changing the name to honor Seriously?.

I used to ridicule Bernie and his childish supporters (e.g. those at the convention) before he dropped out.  Now I ridicule Trump and it doesn't hurt as many people's feelings.

If you're still curious, I summarized it all in great detail in what I promised would be my final Bernie-bashing post.  Which is sad, because I'd love to make a troll thread to see how many former Bernie supporters I could get to pledge never to support a candidate who refused to release his tax returns.  But I keep my promises.

Though some of the ridicule was exaggerated, a lot of it was valid and some of us reacted pretty negatively since it was directed at our candidate. I was one of those people, and it took Trump becoming the nominee for me to see that a lot of those media narratives, double standards, and attacks were unjustified and unfair.

Poor people becoming a majority is a bad thing. If non-Whites were becoming a majority in a vacuum, that in itself wouldn't be a problem. The reason they are taking over though is because they are caught in a cycle of being poor and having lots of children. The end result is the United States becoming a third world nation. It's funny to see someone from NYC say that a minority majority hasn't led to economic disaster, I guess just because he lives in a Manhattan bubble. Half the jobs can't afford to pay minimum wage here. Milk is $5 a gallon. Housing is affordable only if you are a millionaire, on government assistance, or have made a conscious decision never to have children and always have roommates. NYC seriously looks like Dubai with a slightly better human rights record.

...are akin to my thoughts on rebooting Teletubbies with an all-female cast. Find something to care about other than vapid media culture created for indolent children.

Oh come on. That's horridly snobbish.

Would refusing to eat pounds of candy in one sitting make me a food snob?

Very few major movie releases, as of 2016, are worth any thinking person's time, and I have read and heard enough commentary on this one to know that Ghostbusters is not an exception.

Obviously, I'll take (very mildly) feminist vapidity over sexist vapidity, but it's a bit like the choice between soda and diet soda. One is clearly better than the other, but why choose either when you have access to a multitude of alternatives that are not harmful garbage?

Moreover, most commentary - including even much of the most compelling critical commentary - fails to recognize that this is, at its core, a children's movie. This is true, by the way, of most major movie releases as of 2016 other than straight drama and highly sexual comedies. If you're a literate adult who usually watches movies without children, I'm not sure why you should be watching this.

Not sure what's bad about that post.

Well first, "thinking person" in most contexts exudes elitism, as if there's just one way to think.

Second, it's the same broad-brush, "all new things coming out suck" argument, which implies releases waaaaay back when were almost always hitters [no they weren't].

Third, in context of the thread, it seems to be doubling-down on comparing Ghostbusters to Teletubbies.

And finally, the whole post seemingly looks down on movies that are child accessible and/or comedic as opposed to straight-drama, having the audacity to whine about someone wanting to see a movie for, idk, entertainment. Commentary not saying something about Ghostbusters entertaining the inner-child is besides the point anyway.

Short-answer: It's just really mean spirited and narrow-minded. Kinda feels like the type of logic used with Oscars as to why all these dramas no one will remember after December get nominated, while lasting, amusing, innovative, and yes, Summer blockbuster types never make it.

Maybe that wasn't the intention at all, but that's how it rubs me....and I don't even give a hoot about the new movie at all.
