Its my view that while your values remain the same your methods must change and you most move with your natural supporters and adapt to their changing attitudes and aspirations

yes I think that's right.

This is a very appropriate post in this thread, by the way, as it certainly applies to Senator Chafee.  His natural supporters would be the wealthy and upper-middle class in RI.  If he tows the party line on the important economic issues, and holds his ground on moral issues, like military involvement in Iraq and individual liberty, then his constituents will continue to reelect him.
