New CBS Poll:

Congress, which earns a thumbs-up from only 35 percent of Americans – nearly as low a rating as it received last month immediately after lawmakers' unpopular intervention in the Terri Schiavo case

Just 37 percent think what the current Congress has accomplished so far has been good for the country; 41 percent think what Congress has done has been bad.

Disapproval of the Republican-controlled Congress even extends to 39 percent of Republicans, along with 59 percent of Democrats.

I can think of one good thing Congress has done so far (bankruptcy). That's it.

What a horrible bill.  God for bid if someone gets sick in this country and cannot afford to pay off their overpriced medical bill's.

Congress is never highly rated. Wouldn't read too much into it.

Yeah, that was mentioned in the article.  I wonder why Congress consistantly receives poor marks year after year after year?

It probably mainly centers around the fact that people on the whole expect government to solve every single problem facing the country and then get mad when the government is unable to.

I find it interesting that Congress as a whole usually gets poor marks while individual Congressmen and Senators retain high approval ratings.

Because its always the guys from the other states...those corrupt bastards, putting the good of North Dakota before the good of the country, wasting our hard earned taxpayer dollars on pork...but, you know, Senator Smith, he's a good guy.  He forces the federal government to give us our fair share...

Can't help but take a shot at my own Congresswoman (one in my sig) in voting yes on this corporate sponsored bill.  I will still defend voting for her over Melissa Brown, but she lost some brownie points.

It would be a lot more relevant to ask people if they approve or disapprove of their respective congressmen.

A lot of that has to do with gerrymandering. Some states like NY, NJ and CA have specifically pro-incumbent gerrymandering.

It’s like the polls on public schools, most people say they have serious problems but their local public school is good to excellent.

That is probably the best explanation I have ever heard.  But honestly I don't know why they even bother doing this poll.  it has never accurately reflected how the next Congress might be composed.

All politics is local you know.
