The safer route for her career could be a governor run in 2016 due to the strong possibility of Hillary being elected and 2018 being another horrible midterm year resulting in her being dead in the water.

Always finds its way back to the Great Female Savior

We're talking about the political future of a Senator in a red state who's likely to lose if there's a Democrat in the White House come 2018. Hillary has the highest chance of becoming President in 2016 by almost anyone's metric.

Please tell me how it is inappropriate to mention HRC in this thread.

Because not everything links back to her

Wouldn't she just appoint a Democrat to her seat? Doesn't matter, though, she only hangs on if a Republican is President in 2018, most likely. North Dakota would be the first seat to fall in a midterm election. Even with a GOP President, it's still possible that it could fall.

The North Dakota legislature is trying to pass a bill that would require special elections for vacancies. And by trying, I mean they will probably pass the law and have it signed by Gov. Jack Dalrymple. The North Dakota legislature is 68% Republican in the State Senate and 75% Republican in the State House.

(I would like to venture that I support the law change, naturally).

She might not like being a Senator in the minority.

A run for Governor under the current system might be better for her. If she wins, she gets to be Governor and to pick a Senator with as good a chance of winning an eleciton as she does.

A governor-elect can not appoint a senator, and a governor-elect can not become governor until (and if) they resign their other offices.  If she resigned her senate seat, then the current governor could appoint a replacement.

At best she could hold out from resigning her senate seat, past the end of the gubernatorial term, but then you are in the land of fighting suits about what happens when there is no governor.  Are North Dakota lieutenant governors elected independently of the governor?

Can't see how being a Democratic governor in a state where 70%+ seats of the legislature are controlled by Republicans would be much better.
