'There is no reason to suppose that the world had a beginning at all. The idea that things must have a beginning is really due to the poverty of our thoughts.'--Bertrand Russell

Wasn't that, like, literally before we discovered the Univerese DID have a beginning?...

Atheists are to history what Baptists are to biology dude.

I don't think a lot of the Pub candidates have received the memo yet, that on a lot of foreign policy issues, all of the options out there suck, and it's a Hobson's choice. The US is just not in a position anymore, and really never was from a prudential standpoint (as we learned at great cost), to just make and enforce the rules of the road for the planet. So it is a frustrating, lengthy process, often with bad outcomes. The trick is to try to avoid disastrous outcomes. Yes, I know, an "all of our options suck" platform, is not a good marketing strategy politically.

Many will recall that Blair took over the party by arguing that it needed to get with the times. Now his creatures want to take the party back a least a decade.

I'm going to pretend AD had a good post for the first time ever.

Whatever you do, don't click for context.

Oh this is cute. Start moderating posts to cover up the real implications

One of the first times i've ever modded a post for excessive hyperbole.

No regrets.

True regardless of the party or country:

It doesn't matter what the country is, whenever someone loses two straight elections, some people act like it's the apocalypse. Spending 8-10 years in opposition is pretty normal Tongue

Roof probably does not deserve to live, but deciding who deserves to live is not an appropriate role for the criminal justice system.

Washington was much more than just a slave owner, but the Confederacy wasn't much more than a very well organized white supremacy confederation.

The joke alternative option is Nunavut. Respect the heritage of the forum or diaf.

Kentucky requires more respect than any mere Canadian territory. In fact, Kentucky is quite offended that you would say such a thing. He told me to tell you that.

Don't try to argue with Al. You will lose.

It's easier to remove a flag than deal with the gun issue. Which is why they are falling over themselves.
We already dealt with the gun issue this year, eliminating the ability of those convicted of domestic violence to legally own guns despite the opposition of the gun lobby.  Based on what's known so far, I don't see what law could have been in place that could have prevented this that wouldn't have infringed the second amendment rights of people who are neither criminal or crazy.

That's the gun issue.

Knowing what it's like is not particularly difficult if one has empathy and isn't ignorant. Of course, experiencing something is a different thing but I don't that is required for basic understanding.

On the other hand, you would obviously never say something that was completely absurd, cringe-worthy, with little-to-no basis in reality

DISCLAIMER: I'm making this post more as an apologetic for certain members of my extended family than anything else.

It's possible, probable even, that at some point in the relatively near future the principle that couples should have access to civil marriage regardless of the combination of their sexes will be widely understood to be grounded on first principles in such a way that nobody can argue otherwise in good faith. At that point we'll indeed be able to say that people who oppose same-sex marriage are a distasteful fringe and can't possibly hold their position for well-intentioned reasons. I don't think we've yet reached the point where that grounding on first principles is self-evident or self-explanatory. I kind of hope we do (mostly because I think that if opposition to same-sex marriage becomes completely socially unacceptable then there are people whose opinions and morals I otherwise respect who will feel obliged to come around on it), but I don't think we have. It's still possible for somebody to oppose same-sex marriage and not be a generally bad person.

Yeah, but it's not exactly an effortpost either, and in ambiguous situations I'd rather err on the side of the Silver Mine than the Gallery.
