Despite Federalist warnings that with a Republican administration would come chaos and revolution, President Samuel Adams has managed to keep things orderly, if not tranquil, in the new United States. Though generally pro-French in outlook, President Adams has kept the United States out of war, to the chagrin of extreme Republicans and Federalists angered by the XYZ affair, all while keeping the treasury in order at home. The success of his administration has not silenced Federalist critics in the press, but Adams has resisted calls from his partisan colleagues to pass a sedition law, and his frequent employment of religious language and days of prayer has at least partially silenced Federalist charges of atheism.
As the election of 1800 approaches, Adams is seeking renomination by his party to a second term. To avoid the chaotic events of 1800, in which the multitude of Republican candidates almost cost Adams the presidency, party leaders in Congress have called a nominating caucus similar to the one held by the Federalists in 1796. In addition to Adams, Vice President Aaron Burr is also on the ballot, officially as a candidate for vice president, though some suspect he hopes to unseat Adams and become president himself. To offset Burr, Secretary of State James Madison has entered the mix, hoping to restore Virginia's influence over national politics.
The Federalists are also holding a caucus. Though many within the party hoped to nominate former Vice President John Adams, the "Sage of Quincy" has declined to challenge his cousin and good friend, President Samuel Adams. The frontrunner for the nomination is therefore Alexander Hamilton, George Washington's old Treasury Secretary and the ideological leader of the party. Challenging Hamilton are Charles C. Pinckney, a former U.S. foreign ambassador, Governor John Jay, also a former member of the Washington Cabinet, and Congressman John Marshall, who party leaders hope might bring traditionally-Republican Virginia into play.

Former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton has been nominated to challenge the renominated Adams/ Burr ticket! Because two New Yorkers cannot be nominated by the same party, historical precedent gives the second spot on the Federalist ticket to Charles C. Pinckney of South Carolina.
