I don't think Boehner crossed 218. He gained a majority of those voting, for sure, but did not win - they're now counting people who didn't vote.

I think he's at 216-218 now. I can't tell.

Boehner has crossed 218. I don't know what number he's at though. Duckworth did not vote for Pelosi and is silent. (Their feud in December probably).

I'm hearing enough Boehners to guess his totals is in the mid 220s.

According to some rough math in my head, I think if all the Democrats from Cuomo's funeral had showed up, Boehner would have escaped a second ballot by only three votes.

Depending on the outcome of the 2016 Presidential election, Boehner may retire in 2017 to make way for GOP Speaker McCarthy. The votes consistently show that it's too close often. He gained 220-some votes. Had Republicans lost seats, he would have lost the vote today. With a 247 seat GOP majority, it's a little dicy to say that he would survive if the GOP dipped below 239.

So, what would've happened had he gotten less than 218? What are the procedures?

Sorry. It's a majority of the House voting. There were 401 recorded votes so Boehner won again. Now, if it hadn't been that good, and everyone voted and Boehner failed to win a majority, there would be balloting again until someone won a majority of the votes.

Boehner is almost certainly gone (likely by his own choice) if a Republican wins the presidency in 2016, but I wouldn't be all that sure in Kevin McCarthy's succession.

This isn't good for Boehner. In a 246 majority GOP House, only 216 voted for him. Note that a minimum of 20 Republicans voted against him so 235 of the 246 were there, minimum. (I count Webster 12, Goehmert 2, Jordan 1, assorted Republicans 4). That's how my numbers read. He won 216 of the 235 but that means 11 didn't bother voting for some reason.

Dear God, can't a Democratic leader go 20 minutes without uttering the words "middle class?" in a major speech? (Pelosi).

Unrelatedly, did the Speaker spend his entire winter in a tanning salon, hibernating?

Conyers swore in the Speaker, and the Speaker swore in the 114th Congress. The 114th Congress is now as they say, in session.

Biden just talked to Cory Gardner's grandma, who said she couldn't talk because she was watching grandson be sworn in. Tongue

I can't be the only one that felt a bit sentimental at seeing Harkin and Grassley on the floor for the last time?

I don't know if it means anything but three of the Democrats that voted against Pelosi (the Democratic leader in the House) are discussed as potential Senate candidates in 2016.  I am referring to Sinema, Graham and Duckworth of course.  If they're thinking of moving to the Senate, it makes sense that they wouldn't have much of an incentive to vote for their House leader.

Thanks for your concern.  Been to Italy, a beautiful country rich in culture and with wonderful people ... but I don't particularly want your government.  At all.

Gardner's now an official U.S. Senator?

I guess we're going to have to boat to Cuba for condoms now. I don't know how states like Kentucky, Kansas, and Colorado would fare, being so far away from Canada/Mexico.
