"If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the same shall be a Law, in like manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its return, in which case it shall not be a Law."

So I mean, not signing it won't actually veto it. I can see the appeal, maybe the least-bad option from him perspective.

Edit: That said, the media all seem to be reporting on this as a "veto threat," so I guess Earnest may just not have been speaking precisely.

WTI closed at 48 today, the lowest point since 2009. The viability of various shale plays is being tested by the Saudis and some of the other 'safer' OPEC nations. The pipeline which will connect some of the heaviest, most expensive oil in the tar sands of Alberta is no longer economical.

This was an issue 2 years ago, now its a political game.

Of course. But it may well be economical in another 2 years. Nobody thinks oil will stay this low for a very long time.

This. It's part of a long-term strategic investment.

Wonderful news! Few presidents have done so much to protect the environment as President Obama.

I'll wait and see if he actually follows through with this "veto" threat.

As an article I read in the most recent edition The Nation put it, the Keystone XL pipeline was ALWAYS going to be Obama's call, and it's a simple yes or not with no moderate hero way around it. The new Republican-dominated Congress is simply forcing Obama to finally make a decision. I hope he makes the right one, or else it will make me seriously doubt whether voting Democratic or Republican makes a difference when it comes to the environment and the climate change that is rapidly threatening our planet.

The project is either going to be cancelled by TransCanada or US oil giants are going to step up and oppose. It's now against American economic interests to build this thing.

I doubt that there is anything that would keep TransCanada from building at a later date if they get approval but decide to wait for indications that oil prices will be higher once it is finished.

This was Obama's and moderate Dems bargining chip before the election, he certainly won't give in up now that the senate is lost. The veto will be substained and they certainly don't have 290 in House.

I agree that we need alternative energy, but suffocating people's wallets isn't the ideal way to go about it
