Anyone feel free to start a thread in the political debate board. That might be better indeed. This thread will remain focused on mourning and celebrating the legacy of the good people who died today.

As if I was aiming for quality

But my point stands, how will such people be made to accept such attitudes? The law is a rather blunt instrument and can't really change men's souls.

Maybe they shouldn't be there if they "can't accept" freedom of speech and expression.

This is what I was thinking. If somebody cannot handle living in a society that values openness and free speech, then they should find some other place. To attempt to bully the indigenous population into giving them special treatment is unacceptable.

You don't find it at all ironic that you're asking us to celebrate the legacy of these folks while you're claiming it's "undignified' to discuss controversial social/political issues in this thread?  Discussing controversial social/political issues, even when it made people uncomfortable, is their legacy.

Again, I guess I'm fine with splitting the discussion -- free free to split this post to a new thread, even -- but calling the discussion "undignified" or "disrespectful" is...wow, dude.

I was so terribly saddened to read about this earlier today. The cartoons that have been shared in this thread are absolutely brilliant in quality and wit, and serve as a testament to the freedom of expression.

Little can be really said at times like this, but I am deeply moved and encouraged by the demonstrations in Paris and around the world expressing solidarity with Charlie and the rights and liberties of us all. I agree with what's been said before, the only response is to challenge these people further with words, wit, and laughter.

When I first saw the headline I couldn't help but think it was Charlie Hebdo-which is sadly the case. My condolences to all the people who have been murdered in this vicious and barbaric attack.

Terrible.

I hope the bastards responsible are caught quickly and without bloodshed (at least on the end of the French authorities.)

Everyone please show some decency. This isn't the place to continue old debates and reignite clashes of civilization.

I agree. I think we might have to divide it into a memorial and factual update thread here and a "what should be done" thread on political debate.

What do you think? Should we move thread? This is not going all that well.

I understand the sentiment, but these kind of things do not happen happen in a vacuum or for no reason. To seperate the matter of why from this discussion would reduce it to a series of condolences and not much more, which would not be all that meaningful.

I just heard a blurb on NBC that one of the suspects is dead and that the other two are in custody.

Edit: Haven't heard this reported anywhere else.

Good to hear these barbarians have been identified; hopefully they're killed or apprehended with no casualties to the police.

Leaving aside the R.o.P., what effect can we expect this to have on French politics going forward? Will there be a "rally around the flag" and Pres. Hollande, or will this just lead to a FN surge in the polls?

It looks like Panzermiss has wasted no time:

Very nice show of solidarity:

"In a joint statement issued after the attack on Wednesday, the directors of Le Monde and the two state broadcasters Radio France and France Télévisions promised to provide all the material and human resources the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo might need to keep publishing. The effort was necessary, the three directors said, “to preserve the principles of independence and freedom of thought and expression,” which they called “the guarantors of our democracy.”"

Obviously it's disgusting and barbaric, I've spent a lot of time in Paris and love it. But the thing I wanted to comment on is the response of the people of Paris, and people around the world.

It's been strong and clear "Not Afraid" - the moment you turn inwards and trigger fear and paranoia... THAT is when they win.

Have the authorities given any hints as to how they ascertained the identities of the gunmen?

So much for being some kind of hard-core terrorist.

To answer my own question: The Guardian's blog says one of the men identified by police was identified on the basis of an ID card left behind in the getaway car.  That doesn't seem like a very ironclad piece of evidence.

Absolutely horrible. The cowards and terrorists behind this need to be shot or locked up forever.

However, at the same time, I hope (a futile hope, mind you) that people don't overreact respond with hatred, intolerance and mindless knee-jerk xenophobia. I'm sure the last thing these free-thinkers would have wanted is for people to embrace Panzergirl's hatred and racism. Alas, it's France and not Canada.

You know I tend to be a little tired by the whole; "the real victims are the Muslim immigrants" when a Muslim immigrant or a group of Muslim immigrants murders or commit other crimes people. No the real victims are the people killed.

In fact I don't care about the Muslim world's feelings in all this, and the reason I don't care, is becaues in 2001 Bush bend backward not to blame Muslims as a group and people still didn't think it was enough (the hysterics over using the word crusade). They will find a way to blame the victims.

If Muslim immigrants in Europe don't want to be blame, they should do something not to be blame.
