Anyone but McKinley. I voted Bryan but I think Palmer would have been excellent. Prohibition always gets more sympathy from me than they should, but the other candidates are decent enough.

Definitely Bryan. This country would be much better off today if he was elected then.

Bryan without a doubt!  Hasn't yet been a better candidate on paper, not one!

Definitely Bryan. This country would be much better off today if he was elected then.

I find it odd how Democrats pick and choose which of their segregation enablers they disown (Wallace, A Johnson, Eastland, etc.) and which ones they look back fondly upon (Bryan, JFK, Jackson, etc.).  Seems to have a direct correlation with how well historians remember them, which reeks of revisionist history given that they all championed the same economic populism...

That may be because the first group put a high priority on white supremacy, while the second group was merely indifferent towards it, or treated it as a low-priority issue.  Not that that wasn't still shameful, but the main reason for supporting someone like George Wallace was to preserve segregation, while someone supporting WJ Bryan probably has more to do with economic populism and anti-imperialism.

John Palmer (National Democratic) I suppose.

If choosing between the Bills, without hindsight I would choose McKinley, with hindsight I would choose Bryan. By 1900 after McKinley had revealed himself to be an imperialist warmongering pig I would have voted for Bryan in their rematch.

1896 is officially the highest turnout presidential election in alternate history.

McKinley (sane; not a bigot or a radical).
