JCL Enters Presidential Race
Mideast Assemblyman and former At-Large Senator Johanus Calvinus Libertas (Fed-IN) announced his candidacy for president last night, filling a void left by the withdraw of his party's former presumptive nominee, Secretary of State Potus2036 (Fed-CA). JCL's campaign comes at a time of crisis for the Federalist Party, which currently has only three members in elected federal office and which continues to suffer from a lack of engagement amongst the center-right. Though President Lumine Von Reuental (Fed-OH) attempted to rally his party at their National Convention in Virginia Beach, Virginia, a fog of disinterest continues to hand over the convention, a marked contrast from four months ago when Federalists were preemptively celebrating Von Reuental's election.
Well known for his social conservatism, JCL has joined those calling for a revitalized Federalist Party. In an attempt to create excitement, the assemblyman announced that his running mate would be chosen by the convention; however, only one person--perennial candidate Poirot--stepped forward before the deadline. In addition, it remains possible that Southern Speaker Maxwell (DR-AL) may clinch the party's nomination as he attempts to unite the political right for what is sure to be a challenging campaign.

Polnut Declines Third Term
A movement within The People's Party to draft At-Large Senator and former President Polnut (TPP-MA) as the party's presidential candidate met with an insurmountable obstacle yesterday when Senator Polnut announced that he would not seek a third term as president in the upcoming elections. The movement was begun by another former President, Averroes Nix (TPP-NY), who expressed concern that his party was set to endorse an "unreformed" Laborite for president and announced his intention to back any TPP candidate who entered the race. While enthusiasm for Senator Polnut began to crystalize in the aftermath of former Secretary of State Potus2036 (Fed-CA)'s withdrawal from the race, Senator Polnut's declaration that he would continue to back Speaker Bore for the presidency quickly ended speculation for a third Polnut term. As of this writing, Speaker Bore currently leads in the vote for The People's endorsement.

Assembly Debates Anti-Inactivity Amendment
An amendment to the Mideast Constitution that would allow the Assembly to expel legislators who fail to show up for work for seven consecutive days is currently before the legislature. The amendment was introduced by Lt. Governor Bmotely (DR-IN) in response to the absence of Assemblyman CrabCake (Lab-MO), who has not posted in Atlasia since taking office nearly three weeks ago. Given the current composition of the Assembly, this means that the chamber is evenly split between conservative and liberal members, a situation that could indefinitely stall the business of the regional government. Under current provisions, members of the Assembly are automatically removed from office after missing five consecutive votes. Governor TDAS04 (Lab-VA) and Speaker New Canadaland (Lab-ON) have announced their support for this amendment.

February 2015 Federal Election Projections
President and Vice President: Tossup
Bore (Lab)/ Bacon King (TPP) vs. Maxwell/ Dallasfan65 (DR) vs. JCL (Fed)/ Poirot (Ind)
Prior to the withdraw of former Secretary of State Potus2036 from the race, Senator Bore had a commanding lead in the race for president. A vigorous campaign on the part of Southern Speaker Maxwell (DR-AL) and uncertainty at the TPP National Convention, however, have made this a competitive race in the final week of the campaign. While Bore may still be able to claim victory, Maxwell and the right are certainly giving him a run for his money.
(Note: the Mideast Record-Courier has endorsed Senator Bore)

Northeast Senate: Lean Labor
Talleyrand (Lab) vs. MattVT (TPP) vs. Cynic (Ind)
In an odd turn of events, Labor Party candidate Talleyrand is not the furthest-left candidate in this race. That distinction belongs to Northeast Speaker and former Vice President MattVT, the candidate of TPP. We're giving Talleyrand a slight edge here, both because he represents the incumbent party and because he has the potential to win over center-left voters who might normally support TPP.

Mideast Senate: Tossup
Sen. Windjammer (Lab) vs. Spiral (DR)
Senator Windjammer is under a good deal of pressure after a disagreement with At-Large Senator Bacon King led to a drop of support within TPP, whose endorsement the senator was previously expected to receive. With conservatives and liberals registered in nearly equal numbers in the Mideast, this race is certain to be close.
(Note: the Mideast Record-Courier has endorsed Senator Windjammer).

Southern Senate: Tossup
Sen. North Carolina Yankee (Fed) vs. HagridOfTheDeep (Ind)
Incumbent Senator North Carolina Yankee announced he would seek reelection only recently, with his opponent having declared weeks earlier. Though Yankee has won reelection easily in the past, the rise of TPP in his region and the recent troubles of his own party leave him with an uphill path to reelection next week.

Midwest Senate: Likely Labor
Sen. TNF (Lab) vs. Unknown Federalist
Incumbent Senator TNF benefits from a registration advantage in the Midwest, while Federalists remain divided between far-right challenger Cassius and center-right former Emperor Dereich. It seems highly probable that TNF will be returned to the Senate without too much trouble.

Pacific Senate: Solid TPP
Sen. Theodore Cranberry (TPP) (unopposed)
Incumbent Senator Theodore Cranberry is running unopposed in this race and remains highly popular with the public. Barring some unforeseen crisis, he should be reelected handily.
(Note: the Mideast Record-Courier has endorsed Senator Cranberry)

Assembly Deadlocked Over Immigrant Rights Bill
The absence of Mideast Assemblyman CrabCake (Lab-MO) was keenly felt in the regional legislature today, where a vote on the proposed Mideast Migrant Civil Rights Act ended in a 2-2 tie. The bill would have amended the controversial Mideast Right to Life Act to eliminate abortion restrictions for illegal immigrants and was proposed by Assemblyman New Canadaland (Lab-ON), who became Speaker of the Assembly when leftists won control of the chamber this January. Without Mr. CrabCake, however, the legislature was split evenly between conservatives and liberals, meaning that any controversial bill is almost certain to be rejected.
Though elected to the Assembly last month, Mr. CrabCake has not posted in Atlasia since swearing into the Assembly on January 26. A Constitutional amendment currently before the Assembly would allow assemblymen to be removed from office after a week of inactivity.

Superique Nominated For Sec. Of State
Following the resignation of former Secretary of State Potus2036, President Lumine Von Reuental announced yesterday that he would nominate former SoEA Superique (TPP-AK) to resume his old post as the head of the State Department. Superique's nomination comes as the current administration prepares to leave office, meaning that once confirmed the Alaskan diplomat will probably serve only briefly before handing over his office to his successor. Nevertheless, the nominee comes well-prepared for the job, having previously served as Secretary of External Affairs for much of the Duke Administration.

Bore Wins TPP Endorsement
After a harrowing convention fight, in which a draft campaign for At-Large Senator and former President Polnut very nearly denied him the nomination, Northeast Regional Senator and Speaker Bore (Lab-RI) handily won the endorsement of The People's Party for President of Atlasia, with 8 votes to four for Senator Polnut and two for Southern Speaker Maxwell (DR-AL). The endorsement may prove to be the deciding factor in a race that has significantly narrowed since the withdrawal of former Secretary of State Potus2036 and the entrance of Speaker Maxwell, who seems likely to win both the Democratic Republican and Federalist nominations. Bore's running mate, At-Large Senator Bacon King (TPP-OC), was automatically nominated by the convention due to his status as a party member.

Not exactly... (it's complicated)
When I first wrote the bill the main intention was to get rid of the Right to Life Act which I found as going to far. That's what's bogged down the bill. However I found out there are like 4 bills already passed in the Mideast containing similar abortion restrictions. Because of that and CrabCake's absence I abandoned a full repeal attempt and merely tried to tone the the Right to Life Act down. But Shua didn't want such a compromise.

They were trying to eliminate the current abortion restrictions for all. They think you can combine abortion policy with immigration issues. Wasn't a good idea.

They were trying to eliminate the current abortion restrictions for all.
That was (almost) my intention! (I intended to leave some minimal federal restrictions in effect). But I found out multiple bills with similar restrictions were in place.
These are all the abortion related statutes currently in place:
https://uselectionatlas.org/AFEWIKI/index.php/Mideast_Public_Assistance_in_Abortion_Ban_Statute
https://uselectionatlas.org/AFEWIKI/index.php/A.R._4:_2nd_Amendment_to_the_Mideast_Abortion_Statute_II
https://uselectionatlas.org/AFEWIKI/index.php/A.R._4:_Mideast_Abortion_Sex_Protection_Act
As it turns out repealing the Right to Life Act would have had next to no effect. I believe only the waiting time and ultrasound would have been changed.
I intend to "simply" all of these statutes Wink if CrabCake returns.

They think you can combine abortion policy with immigration issues. Wasn't a good idea.
I am partly guilty of this. I could have introduced separate bills for repealing one half of the Right to Life Act and amending the other half. But I chose to repeal the whole thing and start from scratch. At the end the bill was amended to separate abortion and immigration bills anyhow, which would have addressed this concern.
In fact, by voting against the bill YOU are the one combining abortion policy with immigration issues. This is the status quo thanks to the Right to Life Act.

Bill To End Drug Screenings Meets With Broad Support
Applicants for welfare services will no longer have to undergo drug screenings before receiving benefits should a proposal introduced by Speaker New Canadaland (Lab-ON) pass the Assembly. The bill, which would eliminate the drug screenings currently required by Mideast Statute, has met with broad support in the regional government, both from New Canadaland's Labor Party and from members of the opposition. Assemblyman Shua and Lt. Governor Bmotely, both members of the libertarian Democratic Republican Party, have joined Governor TDAS04, a Laborite, in supporting this legislation, on the grounds that such screenings are a waste of time in light of the legalization of the most common drugs. Given the diverse coalition in support of this measure, it seems very likely that it will pass the Assembly, which is currently evenly divided between conservatives and liberals.

Amended Civil Rights Act Proceeds To A Final Vote
After one of the longest and most divisive debates in recent history, the redrafted Civil Rights Act of 2014 is once again up for a vote. Authored by Midwest Regional Senator TNF (Lab-MN), the bill initially passed the Senate in late January, when President Lumine Von Reuental (Fed-OH) requested a redraft owing to several controversial passages. As currently amended, the bill places a $150 Million cap on any reparations to be paid to the descendants of slaves and Native Americans, amends the contentious Section 2.10 to allow for "demonstrably justifiable" dress code differences between men and women, and reduces the employer fine for failing to accommodate the pregnancies of their female employees, among other changes. While the bill seems likely to pass the Senate, President Von Reuental has yet to comment on the final version of the bill, leaving its ultimate fate unclear.

Controversy Surrounds Federalist Nomination
Counterintuitive though it may seem, the identity of the Federalist nominee for president remains unknown, as party delegates and observers alike at the Federalist National Convention debate whether party rules allow them to endorse the candidate of another party over one of their own members. The debate arose in the aftermath of former Secretary of State Potus2036's withdrawal from the presidential race just days before the election, leaving conservatives with little time to find a replacement. As it turns out, they needn't have worried: before long, both Southern Speaker Maxwell (DR-AL) and Mideast Assemblyman Johanus Calvinus Libertas (Fed-IN) both declared their intention to contest the Federalist nomination. Speaker Maxwell, who had been Mr. Potus's running mate, quickly took a lead in the endorsement vote, and it appeared he would be the party's candidate in tomorrow's election.
JCL, however, refused to concede defeat, arguing that Maxwell, who is not a member of the Federalist Party, was barred from becoming the party's nominee. His contention was based on a contentious passage in the Federalist bylaws, which allows the party to endorse non-members only when "numbers permit". With Maxwell supporters arguing that this passage means 'when there are more candidates than offices' and JCL supporters insisting it means 'when there are more offices up for election than Federalists running', it seems that the debate may not be resolved before the election begins.

I don't think I've seen any coverage of rail transit, which is the issue that has been generating the most discussion in the Assembly.  Good job on the paper otherwise though.

Attack On Census Bureau Rattles Nation
In what was apparently an aborted attempt to torch the nation's voter rolls, four attackers were apprehended outside the Census Bureau in Nyman last night, sparking fear of further attacks as the nation prepares to hold its 34th presidential election. According to an article published by Izvestia, the official publication of Game Moderator Kalwejt, the attackers were captured while attempting to enter the building, and were quickly placed under custody by police officials. The GM speculated that the attack might be related to a letter received a few days ago by the Census Bureau threatening to disrupt the February elections. In response to the attacks several notable public figures, including At-Large Senator Polnut, Speaker Bore, and Southern Speaker Maxwell, urged the nation to remain calm and abstain from making accusations until all of the facts are known.

Gass3268 Takes Early Lead in Midwest Gubernatorial Race
Incumbent Midwest Governor Gass3268 (Lab-EX) currently leads in his bid for reelection by a wide margin, with 75% of ballots cast to 25% for challenger Foucaulf (Fed-MN), with overall turnout at roughly 38%. The governor's lead is due mostly to overwhelming turnout on the part of his supporters, with Labor Party members outnumbering Federalists at the polls by a wide margin. Though the race is still uncalled, this remains a disappointment for the Federalists, who had aggressively campaigned on Mr. Foucaulf's behalf and who had hoped the unpopularity of the governor's predecessor, Lebron FitzGerald, would give them an edge. Whether Mr. Foucaulf can overcome this early setback and effectively get his own supporters to the polls remains to be seen.
For more detailed coverage of the election, as well as in-depth analysis of the returns, see the Mideast Record-Courier's live results thread.

Windjammer Claims Early Leads As Election Kicks Off
The election is not over yet, but incumbent Mideast Regional Senator Windjammer (Lab-MI) appears to have an early lead in his bid for reelection, with roughly 64% of the vote to 27% for his opponent, former Assembly Speaker Spiral (DR-MO). This development comes at the end of a mostly silent campaign, in which neither candidate made a single appearance after January and much of the haggling for votes was conducted behind closed doors, either by PM or by surrogate campaigners. Owing a controversial exchange between Windjammer and At-Large Senator Bacon-King (TPP-OC, the senator was widely considered to be endangered, prompting many (including Windjammer himself) to predict a Spiral victory. Though there is still plenty of time for Spiral to make a comeback at the polls, it appears that for the moment Windjammer has the edge in this critical race.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Federal Abortion Law
In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court struck down the Late Term Abortion Restriction Act earlier today, ruling that the federal government "has no authority to legislate on abortion." The law was brought under question following the decision of Northeast citizen Janet Roe to file a claim against the Department of Justice after her medical license was revoked for violating federal abortion law. Citing several past cases, Ms. Roe's attorney, Midwest resident Foucaulf, argued that the Constitution does not grant the Senate the right to legislate on such matters, and the court ultimately ruled in his favor, stating that the powers held by the national legislature are "broad, but not universal". Following the ruling, Attorney General ZuWo thanked the court for its hospitality in what it likely to be the last case of his term as the nation's chief lawyer.
As a result of this ruling, the ability to regulate abortion practices now belongs entirely to the regions, a state of affairs that will have wide-sweeping ramifications, not just in the medical world, but in regional governments as well. This is especially true for the Mideast, where a bill to repeal regional abortion restrictions recently failed due to the absence of Assemblyman CrabCake (Lab-MO). As of this writing, neither Governor TDAS04 nor any member of the Assembly has not commented on whether  the regional government plans to take further action on this issue.

February 21-22, 2015

Windjammer Reelected
Defying predictions that he was the Labor incumbent most likely to go down to defeat in the February elections, Mideast Regional Senator Windjammer (Lab-MI) was projected to have won a second term in the Senate by two major news sources last night. His victory came as a surprise to many, drawing congratulations from public figures across the political spectrum, including Senator North Carolina Yankee (Fed-NC) and Game Moderator Kalwejt (ASB-VT).
Windjammer's victory came as his fellow Laborite, Midwest Senator TNF (Lab-MN), came up against an unexpectedly strong challenge from former Emperor Dereich (Fed-ND). While TNF has now retaken the lead, for several hours the Labor firebrand (and the second most senior member of the Senate) trailed his opponent by a narrow margin, only surpassing the Federalist candidate early this morning. Independent Federalist Cassius, who lost his party's nomination to Dereich but remained on the ballot, has thus far not won a single vote.
Meanwhile, in a seemingly inexplicable turn of events, Senator North Carolina Yankee remains far behind his independent challenger, SoI Hagrid. While the margin between the two is expected to narrow as the election goes on, the fact that Hagrid has gone nearly 48 hours as the leading candidate in this race should certainly alarm Federalists, who must retain the Southern seat or face being reduced to a single senator.
To the North, Northeast CJO Talleyrand (Lab-DE) has been projected to win the Northeast Senate race, currently leading his nearest opponent, Northeast Rep. Cinyc (Ind-NY), by almost 2 to 1. In the Pacific, incumbent Senator Theodore Cranberry (TPP-NM) was projected to have won his own race early yesterday afternoon, after his Federalist opponent, Jojoju1998, dropped out prior to the election. The presidential race remains uncalled, though Northeast Regional Senator Bore (Lab-RI) holds a significant lead over Speaker Maxwell (DR-AL) and Assemblyman JCL (Fed-IN).

Assembly Considers Expansion Of Lt. Governor's Powers
With the regional legislature deadlocked due the the absence of Assemblyman CrabCake (Lab0MO), Mideast lawmakers are considering introducing a measure that would grant the Lt. Governor the power to break ties in the Assembly. Similar to a federal provision allowing the vice president to cast the deciding vote when the Senate is deadlocked, this measure would allow the Assembly to conduct business in the event that a legislator's absence leaves the chamber evenly divided. While Lt. Governor Bmotely (DR-IN) supports this measure, he has declined to introduce it himself, in order to avoid drafting legislation giving himself greater authority. Assemblyman and presidential candidate JCL (Fed-IN) has offered to do so in his stead.

No one has been elected yet. There is still a day left in the election.

Harry can still make a projection.

I mean, irl, there are projections before every vote is counted. There is nothing with that.

I've been a bit too negative in these last couple of days, and for that I'm sorry, both to Harry Truman and Windjammer. Congrats on the win, good luck in the Senate.

The headline does not say "projected." Discouraging voting by suggesting the election is over is not cool, imo.

It's pretty much what RL media does. Oh yes, they use a word "projection", but headlines are usually "XXX elected" way before it should be official.

The real life media doesn't project any states while the polls are still open there.  The Atlasian media is doing that here.

Windjammer hasn't been reelected until I say he has.
