My goodness, us political junkies have had a rough start to the year.

At least he lived to see West Virginia become a Red State, something he likely was dreaming of some time.

RIP

He was convicted federally and never owned up to it. That's pretty sad, really.

Very sad to read this. Coming from a West Virginia family, I have heard a lot of good things. During his tenure (as with Cecil Underwood), he employed my great grandfather (the sole Republican in Braxton County) on some construction projects of major importance on a local level.

He was convicted federally and never owned up to it. That's pretty sad, really.
This too. But I like dirty, brazen assholes like Arch Moore, Blago, and Charlie Rangel. They are entertaining and colorful.

It seems he died in peace and well. His daughter was sworn into the U.S. Senate just prior to that day and he lived to see West Virginia become a red state. He also lived to his 90s. Can't beat that as a way to go out. Succeeded his wife by a few months, which is probably why he died - which is tragic. Probably hung on to in order to see his daughter become a U.S. Senator.

RIP, Governor.

My uncle voted against Moore in 1988 over a pepperoni roll. True story.

There's a tendency to die on the day of a milestone. For ordinary people, this includes Birthdays and Holidays (with Jews more likely to die on Jewish Holidays and Christians more likely to die on Christian Holidays.)

A famous political example is John Adams and Thomas Jefferson dying on the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

I think there's a tendency with those near the end of their lives to push themselves to last a little bit longer if a day that matters is around the corner.

So, at a WVU game, Moore supporters had a tent in which they were giving away free pepperoni rolls while registering students to vote. My uncle (now a Democrat, than a Republican) was a Moore supporter already registered to vote. When he requested a roll (Pepperoni rolls are huge up there), the woman refused because he was already registered, despite the fact that nobody was eating the rolls. So my uncle voted for Gaston Caperton instead as a good.
