I don't know anything about the case besides the small blurb -- that he pumped ten bullets into a carful of people.  unless he knew them beforehand, how could that meet the threshold of first-degree murder?

I'm pretty sure that first degree murder isn't contingent on whether or not you know the person. Even if you assume there was no premeditation, this case definitely is not a second or third degree one.

There has to be some ambiguity for the jury to go for it. Here we had no weapon on the victim, no evidence of a struggle, and a massive use of force against people who were in the car and posing no threat to him.

Like, I don't think the jury would have acquitted Zimmerman if Trayvon Martin was shot from ten feet away in the back, either.

The incident got national attention around the time the Zimmerman trial happened. Perhaps it was a reflection of that.

I disapprove. Not because Dunn isn't guilty or deserving (which he clearly is), but because he was already sentenced to an effective life sentence on the lesser charges, and retrying him on the murder one was a waste of time and resources. It probably was only done because Florida wanted to save face after the Zimmerman verdict.

Self-defense requires a reasonable (even if mistaken) cause to fear either death or severe bodily harm with a need for forceful defense, typically where escape or retreat is impossible. Fear of another due to ethnicity, culture, or religion (animus) does not qualify.

We had one of those here in the Renisha McBride case, where a girl knocked on Theodore Wafer's door in the middle of the night looking for help after a car accident, and instead got a shotgun blast to the face. Finally they'll both be somewhere where they won't be harming anyone else.
