Interesting.  I would have probably gone with San Francisco, but Boston is a good choice.

So far the only cities that are definitely making a bid are Boston and Rome.

Bill Simmons offered some interesting commentary on this today on Twitter. He said LA is "sprawling, has the hotels and venues, has almost everything" and that Boston residents already think the city is too cramped. I've got to agree with him.

LA has hosted the Olympics twice though.  It's time for another city to give it a try.  I agree with Simmons, which is why I preferred San Francisco over Boston or DC, but if I had to choose between the two East Coast cities, I would go with Boston because I wouldn't want the Olympics anywhere near federal government buildings.

He ran the Olympics in Salt Lake City, which is why I brought this up...

Yeah but LA has already hosted twice. I guess Boston would work. Hopefully it doesn't get axed immediately like Chicago did last time around.

They'll probably lose. I don't see how Boston beats Rome or one of the rumored other Europeans cities (Paris, Hamburg, Berlin). Then there's South Africa, which the IOC so, so desperately wants to bid...

He's not running the bid, but I think he's on the committee.

The US should just stop participating in the olympics.  Let Europe finance these boondoggles and host the games in their former colonies.

Then we could start our own pan American games that honors talent, positive competitive spirit, and frugality.

But that'll never happen.

What about the "U.S. State Games"? Where individual states compete against each other?

Just the bribe money needed for the IOC to choose them would wilt the coffers.

Like most things, the US would call a pan-national event a 'world' something or other.

The Olympics is only a boondoggle if there's no forward thinking. Athens was the ultimate example of what happens when get it wrong. And Sochi is also going along the same track.

I think this means that the USOC has no real intention of wanting to host in 2024. This bid will probably go down in flames, just as NYC and Chicago did. My personal preference was for San Francisco, but Los Angeles would've probably been the strongest city the US could have put up.

I'd like to see a Tahoe bid for 2026, but infrastructure would seem to be the biggest barrier.

I personally would've went with SF, but Boston's cool too.

If Boston were to host the Olympics, financial issues would be a huge pain though. Ugh.

This won't be the first time Boston has had anything to do with the Olympics as Harvard Stadium hosted six of the group stage soccer matches in 1984.  However Harvard is too small to be the Olympic stadium and I don't think there is room to expand it to the required size on even a temporary basis unless they knock some other stuff down.

Gillette Stadium is technically large enough to meet the IOC's official requirements, it would be the smallest stadium since Barcelona if it were used as is. Expansion would be easy as you'd only need to eliminate some parking, but Gillette Stadium is in Foxboro and not in Boston itself, and since the IOC really prefers the stadium to be in the host city, I don't think planning on Gillette would result in a successful bid.  However, Gillette is too new to need a replacement, so I can't see developing another large stadium from scratch for the Patriots to use.

Another possibility would be to expand Alumni Stadium at Boston College.  It is one of the smaller ACC stadiums (only Duke and Wake Forest have smaller) so BC would probably welcome expansion, especially if someone else were to pay for it, but I'm doubtful it could be expanded to the needed size, or that they'd be able to get people in and out easily enough.

The only realistic shot would be a new stadium for Boston College somewhere in Boston but outside the current campus.

A big enough pain that Boston has withdrawn its bid.  The city was unwilling to be placed on the hook for potential cost overruns.

A Boston Olympics would have been neat, but for the sake of the city I'm glad sanity prevailed on this.
