"Market" poll for the left-liberal "Standard" daily newspaper.

Poll was conducted slightly before Christmas and because it has only a sample of 411 people you get a trend, but you should still treat it with a truckload of salt (5% MoE).

http://derstandard.at/2000010210943/Jeder-Zweite-sieht-Islam-als-Gefahr-fuer-Oesterreichs-Kultur

Poll respondents were asked to say if the following phrases apply or not.

Translation of phrases from top to bottom:

72-11 Most Austrians don't really know what Islam is all about
66-14 Muslims in Austria need to distance themselves from the Islamic State (IS)
65-14 The way muslims in Austria dress and behave, annoys most Austrians
51-26 Many Austrian muslims have the same attitude toward Islam as Christians have towards Christianity
51-34 Islam is a threat to Austrian culture
50-25 Islam strives to change Austrian society
48-20 The Islamic State (IS) has also many supporters in Austria
45-37 I myself don't really know what Islam is all about
45-30 Most muslims in Austria are more pious/religious than most Christians
43-34 Christians, Jews and Muslims believe in the same God
41-31 The Islamic State (IS) has nothing to do with muslims in Austria
40-27 Islam is a backwards (-oriented) religion
35-31 Among Austrian muslims there are many jihadists

50-33 The anxiety about Islam in Austria is overblown
47-19 The Austrian government is doing the right thing when it comes to Islam
65-18 Anyone who lives in Austria, should personally abandon the Muslim faith
71-12 Christians should convert Muslims in Austria to Christianity

I don't see the contradition, you don't need to understand someone to think they're a problem. Before I knew anything about the beliefs of Scientologist my opinion of them was negative because of their acts.

I don't need to undestand why Jehovah's Witnesses think blood transfusions is wrong, to think that it's problem when they deny their sick children treatment because of blood transfusions.

You don't need to understand people's beliefs to judge them for how they act.

It could be because of this song by Nervous Norvis, but I could be wrong about that.

What does this even mean? If it were literally the case wouldn't that mean Austrian Muslims are as secular/liberal as their Christians?

That's what I took it to mean. Why do you find it odd? MANY Muslims are nominal at best and MANY are crazy IS sympathizers. Neither group accounts for all Muslims. That's accurate.
