Me and the partner with comedienne Angelah Johnson.

Is it just me, or do gay guys refer to their significant other as "the partner," "the boyfriend," or "the husband" as opposed to "my partner," "my boyfriend," or "my husband"? I admit I tend to prefer "the boyfriend" as opposed to "my boyfriend."

I like "my boyfriend". It lets the world know that "the boyfriend" is mine, so hands off! Angry

I've heard girls I know refer to their better half as "the boyfriend"/"the boy"/"the husband."

Replacing "boy" with "girlfriend" to fit the context of a straight dude better, I used both "my" and "the" along with SO interchangeably when I was dating.

I used "the" more with close friends or with acquaintances when the relationship was going down the drain, "my"  with acquaintances.

So I guess it's all good then.

Really dislike the use of "the". I find it a bit dehumanizing, since it reduces the person to a role. "My" simply defines a relation to me so that's fine.

And I'm only half-joking here - my experience is that people who refer to their partners with a "the" are horrible. No offense to you guys. Tongue

I guess I've never paid attention to this, and thinking back on it, I use them interchangeably. I typically say "my" in introductions or conversations that are a bit more personal, and "the" in interactions where the personal factor seems removed.

I always said 'my'. I call Michael 'my husband' all the time and 'the husband' if I'm making fun of some domestic demand to come home Smiley

I've used the "my" version exclusively, and I can't even remember ever hearing someone saying "the _____" non-facetiously.

When in a relationship, I tend to use "my" almost exclusively, but I do say like "the gf" or "the bae" almost in a joking way.

I usually say the boyfriend when I'm bragging on him, or when I'm teasing him.
