82 people? Supported George Wallace? Voted for every Republican nominee since 1972 (with the exception of Perot's first run)? Flat desert? $0 median female income? An economy based on oil and gas drilling?

Seems like an amazing place.

The place epitomizes just why vast swaths of West Texas appear to me to be one of the most unattractive and least desirable places to live on this planet - flat, near featureless, and to the extent touched by man, basically a junk yard.

I remember when I was about 11 years old first discovering Loving County, looking at - yes you guessed it - gasoline station maps (used to get them free and I arranged to get them for all 50 states), that clearly outlined county lines. In the days long before the internet, I examined counties that seemed unpopulated, looking for the one that seemed to have the fewest people of all, and Loving, which on the map did not even bother to note the existence of the hamlet of Mentone which it hosts, seemed a prime candidate. Life Magazine must have had ESP, reading my mind, because lo and behold, the very next month, Loving County was featured as its cover as the least populated county in the US. I fantasized that due to my curiosity and odd interests, I literally put the place on the map as they say.

The fact that it's anti-litter makes it FF-ish.

West Texas has an allure about it that people from other parts of the country - particularly parts east of the Mississippi - fail to appreciate. There can be something very calming about the flatness and the quiet and the wind. But when you stick a bunch of mobile homes and freight trucks and ornery signs everywhere, that appeal quickly evaporates.

For West Texas counties, I far prefer Presidio County. You've got the haunting desolation of the Chihuahua Desert, the kitschy artist colony of Marfa; it's where the No Country for Old Men region of Texas starts blending into the quirkiness of New Mexico.

Horrible County.

-No scene
-No indie arthouse movie theaters.
-If they have any churches it's probably boring, conservative and full of olds.
-You'd have to travel far to play Ingress there.

Clearly the pay is good enough for them to get by without them making their womenfolk work.

I love distant and deserted places. There's no sight quite like a grand courthouse looming over a tiny town. I've never been to West Texas, but I hope to go someday.
