It depends.  I'd rather live in a pre-WWII suburb than (virtually) any rural area*, but I'd rather live in some rural areas than any exurb.

*The exception being Berkshires/Western MA, which I'd gladly choose even over most urban areas.

I grew up in a rural place and hated it, now I appreciate it. I can't see myself here forever, but it's not the worst place I could be. I'd rather live in a city than suburbs. Given the choice of rural vs. suburbs... rural all day any day.

It depends. If it's a suburb that is within city limits and is basically a town that was annexed by urban sprawl then that. If an out of town suburb, definitely rural.

Easily the burbs. And for practical reasons. Sure, the countryside is often prettier, but after a while, the remoteness of rural areas is terrifying. I'd be fine even with a small metro, but I like having restaurants, supermarkets, hospitals, and above all, jobs,  within a convenient distance. Suburbia works better in small to medium sized cities though. The megacity burbs have such intolerable traffic, sprawl, etc that the entire purpose of suburbia, convenience, is negated.

If I could have it any way, I would have it like this:

Childhood: Rural
Adolescence: Suburban
Adulthood: Urban
Retirement: Rural
Elderly: Suburban

Suburbs, rural Ontario seems boring overall honestly.

I feel like adolescents and the elderly are the two groups most ill-suited to the suburbs, actually.

Obviously I'd choose "urban" for all of my life-stages, though I do understand the appeal of suburbs to parents of young children, and of rural areas to still-mobile olds.

Suburban. Preferably a suburb close to a city and with an easy mass transit option to get into that city.

Rural areas creep me out.

Hudson is "rural." That says it all, doesn't it?

Eh, what exactly made you decide to pick up and move across the country from Orange County to Hudson, NY of all places?

Are we talking suburbs with identical houses and white picket fences or not?

By the default of having fewer people and  more scenery, rural.

At least in urban areas, one can distract oneself with amazing food and attractions from the crowds.

Suburbs are just monotonous and forced.

Pedestrian friendly, historic with great and well preserved architecture, easy train ride to NYC from the station but a five minute walk away, lots of artists and other neat folks for my partner Dan and myself, very gay friendly, and one can make a real difference in a small town, with enough time and the right skill set. It's been a great adventure, and Dan and I look forward to exploring the east coast a lot more, an area of the country with which I have but passing familiarity. For me, life is about experiences, new and challenging ones, and it has been a grand adventure so far - one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. But boy it's cold right now!

Oh this Dan development is not something I am familiar with either. Is Dan from Hudson, NY? Did you move there for love? Cheesy

Suburban especially if it includes the quasi urban-suburban hybrids emerging in places like Orange County, California.

Suburban, though I'd take a small city over a larger suburb (take Chapel Hill and Cary).
