Assuming that both Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney run, which candidate would benefit the most? Does it create an opening for another establishment-friendly candidate to slip by or make it easier for one of the right-wingers to pull it off?

You didn't ask this question, but Christie is clearly the huge loser (no pun intended) in this scenario. He might not even make it to Iowa if both Bush and Romney run. Other losers would be the "backup establishment candidates" such as Walker, Kasich, and Pence.

The winners are everybody else, the non establishments and Tea Partiers. Paul, Cruz, Carson, Huckabee, etc.

It would be great if Bush and Romney both run, throw in Christie (yeah you'd need a crane to do it....), maybe Walker and Kasich, and we could have a reverse of 2012 with the establishment Republican split allowing Ted Cruz to walk away with the nomination.

sometimes when two front-runners go after each other they end up destroying eachother, just look at Iowa 2004 where Gephardt and Dean attacked each other and ended up both losing to Kerry and Edwards.

Interesting question.

Rand Paul seems to offer the best ideological contrast (new ideas VS guys who have been out of office since 2006) especially if Romney positions himself to Jeb's right. His main problem is that it would be a race between three sons of prominent politicians.

Ted Cruz doesn't have that baggage, although he'll have problems with fundraising against the Texas-centered Bush machine.

Scott Walker's another Governor, but he might have the best combination of record and recent rhetoric. Unlike Paul and Cruz, he doesn't really have enemies in the party.

Cruz should be able to have a significant grassroots fundraising operation.  He has many serious obstacles to the nomination, but I don't think money is one of them.

Lean Huckabee, particularly if Cruz and Paul both run and Santorum does not.

Huck would be weird. The GOP final three would be former Governors whose terms ended in 2006.

Jeb seems to be positioning himself in Huckabee's sweet spot, socially conservative but with solutions to the working class and middle class. So it might not be enough of a contrast for the final three.

Actually tempted to say Walker. Yes it would hurt his chances of gaining traction, but an all-out war could benefit more conservative establishment candidates, and if he does survive the early rounds, he could make a good compromise to the Paul/Cruz types who may struggle to get majority support in a Republican primary.

Romney, because he'd still win the nomination.

I think if Romney runs the primary narrative will be Romney vs. Bush. The other candidates will be more pushed aside.

The Tea Party probably won't be able to get their candidate, but they're not going to be irrelevant. And they're not fond of either Romney or Bush.

Who on Earth is Jeb Bush's constituency if he's running against Romney and several purists?
