As explained by some guy speaking at church once about checking privilege, where he touched on the five ways in that which he personally has lots of power and privilege:

1-He's White
2-He's Male
3-He's Straight
4-He's American
5-He's Christian (though he prefaced this by saying that many would dispute that)

Like him I also score a 5, so yes, I'm aware of my privilege.

Male, American. So do I start from the bottom or go for the top value? A 2 or a 4.

4 (white male straight American agnostic). But those are terrible ways to define privilege. If it were up to me, it would be more based on power, income, and wealth, not on huge groups of people like gender or race.

2 (although Canada's just as privileged)
I've stopped identifying as Christian as a kid, but BRTD's church sounds interesting.

It's basically a bunch of young liberal white people waving their arms around in the air and doing lots of shaking to post-hardcore and indie rock-ish renditions of worship songs and hymns and listening to someone give an Upworth-esque talk about Jesus was the original Tumblr SJW.

The rest of the "sermon" (more of a monologue, as this guy was just some guy from the worship band and not an actual pastor) was mostly him talking about the Ferguson shooting and CIA torture documents.

I was raised Christian, so I could probably pretend to be one if necessary.

I'm straight, but I've actively explored other options.

I'm white, but I'm bursting at the seems with what they call 'white liberal guilt'.

I'm male.

I'm American, but I live abroad.  To be sure, by not being a citizen of where I reside, I do miss out on some important things (for example, I pay my fair share of taxes but don't get to vote, and never had access to unemployment benefits or even job finding centers despite living here for 10 years).  But I'm pretty sure that I was being silly by scoring myself a '4' rather than a '5', criteria be damned.  I'm fairly sure that I haven't suffered any more as a result of not being a Christian, at least not where I am.  Religion is not pertinent to people's daily lives in an especially public or vocal way.  But maybe that's just me and my bubble.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure when he said "I'm American" it was just a shorthand way of saying "I live in a developed Western country." If he was speaking in Canada, Australia or Austria the point and what he said wouldn't be much different.

'privilege' isn't about your life experience. It's about your moral status under identity politics.  if only I could find a way to not be 'white' by the fact that my ancestors were pushed to the far reaches of Britain by Anglo invaders 1500 years ago, and so gain for myself status as a member of subaltern race, I could talk with seething righteous indignation about the injustice of the white man without implicating myself.

Assuming American can be supplemented for another first-world Western country, 4. I am not religious but am white, male and straight.

This is a more expansive definition of the privilege points system that is used in my social circles, since that omits religion and country of origin, which strike me as somewhat redundant to the other categories. By that standard I am a 2, while by this one I am a 3, since I am a straight American male.

Being a Christian makes you privileged in the US but it's a negative in many countries in the world (mildly so in Sweden, severely so in most of the Middle East).

I have a hard time seeing how being American makes you more privileged than being West European, considering the latter enjoys a far better standard of living.

I scored a 3 (straight, male, American)

The creator of this index forgot the most important aspects of being privileged, income and wealth. I wouldn't call a straight, white, Christain, American male who lives in poverty "privileged".

Being rich is like the most important aspect of being privileged, IMO. Junk index!

I would be a 2. (3, if you redefine American as citizen in a developed western democracy)

But really it's a junk index. Case in point, according to this measurement 1) Margret Thatcher was less privileged than the male coal miners she was battling against during the miners strike, 2)  my self being less privileged than a poor black, but straight and Christian man in Mississippi, and 3) the Queen of England being less privileged than BRTD.

Even if you belong to those that like to profess privilege to groups of people, instead of individuals (which, if you ask me, is an idiotic way to look at things, but to each his own) any index not including wealth and education are obviously a ridiculous instrument of measurement, which even the most politically correct must confess.

Wow, Sweden really does sound amazing sometimes.  Nice to see that my Scandanavian brethren give those nasty Christians what-for.

I'm a 4, btw.

Well I'm from an immigrant family from a non-western country so I deserve to not have that privilege point.
